Purpose

In this project, students will explore the fascinating world of animal adaptations by creating their own unique animals tailored to survive on an imagined planet. Through hands-on activities and collaborative learning, they will deepen their understanding of how adaptations contribute to survival, reproduction, and community living. This experience will foster critical thinking, self-directed learning, and a sense of belonging as students engage with peers, reflect on their learning journey, and contribute to a collective class book.

Learning goals

Students will explore how animal adaptations contribute to survival in various environments by designing their own unique animal and explaining its adaptations. They will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills as they engage in a simulation game to create animals suited for specific habitats. Through self-directed learning, students will use feedback to refine their understanding and articulate their learning in a collaborative class book. By the end of the project, students will have a deeper understanding of adaptation concepts and the ability to apply this knowledge creatively.
Standards
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] 3-LS2-1 - Construct an argument that some animals form groups that help members survive.
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] LS.4.C - Adaptation
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] 3-LS4-2 - Use evidence to construct an explanation for how the variations in characteristics among individuals of the same species may provide advantages in surviving, finding mates, and reproducing.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will create a unique animal model designed to survive on a fictional planet, incorporating specific adaptations. Each student will write a detailed explanation of their animal's adaptations and survival strategies, which will be shared during a gallery walk for peer feedback. Additionally, students will contribute a page to a collaborative class book, featuring illustrations and descriptions of their animal's adaptations, showcasing the diversity of survival strategies across different environments.

Launch

Begin the project with an interactive storytelling session where students embark on an imaginary journey to a newly discovered planet filled with diverse habitats. Present them with vivid images and sounds of these environments, sparking curiosity about the creatures that might live there. Encourage students to brainstorm and sketch initial ideas of animals with unique adaptations that could thrive in these settings, setting the stage for their own animal creation project.

Exhibition

Host a "Planetary Animal Adaptation Fair" where students present their custom-designed animals and explain their unique adaptations to classmates, teachers, and family members. Arrange interactive stations where students can showcase their animal models and engage visitors with questions and discussions about survival strategies. Incorporate a digital component by creating a virtual gallery of the class book, allowing a broader audience to explore the diverse adaptations and environments.
