Purpose
Students will engage in a hands-on service-learning project that connects them with their community to explore the essential question: "How does serving others serve me?" Over four weeks, students will collaborate to identify a local need, design a service project, and implement their plan, using their unique skills and talents to make a positive impact. Through this process, they will reflect on their experiences, develop a deeper understanding of civic engagement, and cultivate a sense of belonging and identity within their community.
Learning goals
Students will explore the concept of service by identifying community needs and developing projects that address these needs, fostering a sense of responsibility and empathy. Through collaborative efforts, students will practice teamwork and communication, enhancing their ability to work with diverse groups. By engaging in self-reflection and receiving feedback, students will cultivate self-directed learning skills and an academic mindset, understanding how their actions can create positive change. Critical thinking and problem-solving will be emphasized as students devise innovative solutions to real-world challenges, promoting kindness and understanding within their communities.
Standards
- [National Council for the Social Studies] D2.Civ.6.3-5 - Describe ways in which people benefit from and are challenged by working together, including through government, workplaces, voluntary organizations, and families.
- [National Council for the Social Studies] D4.7.3-5 - Explain different strategies and approaches students and others could take in working alone and together to address local, regional, and global problems, and predict possible results of their actions.
- [National Council for the Social Studies] D4.6.3-5 - Draw on disciplinary concepts to explain the challenges people have faced and opportunities they have created, in addressing local, regional, and global problems at various times and places.
Competencies
- Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
- Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
- Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
Products
Students will create a "Kindness Campaign" that includes personalized cards, posters, and a digital presentation showcasing their service projects and reflections. Each student will contribute to a collaborative mural that depicts acts of kindness and community service. Additionally, students will compile a service journal documenting their experiences, challenges, and growth throughout the project, which will be shared with peers and the school community.
Launch
Begin the project with a "Community Connection Day," where students participate in a guided neighborhood walk to observe and document acts of kindness and areas needing support. Invite local community leaders or volunteers to share stories about their service experiences and the impact they've made. After the walk, facilitate a reflective discussion where students share their observations and brainstorm ways they can contribute positively to their community using their unique skills and talents.
Exhibition
Students will organize a "Service Showcase" where they present their service projects to peers, family, and community members. Each student or group will create a display that highlights their project's impact, the skills they utilized, and the personal growth they experienced. The event will include interactive stations where attendees can engage in activities related to the projects, fostering a community-wide dialogue on kindness and collaboration.
