Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to immerse young learners in the exploration of light and shadows through playful, hands-on activities that stimulate curiosity and discovery. By engaging with community partners like photographers and theater lighting designers, children will connect classroom concepts to real-world applications, fostering a deeper understanding of how light influences our perception of the world. Through collaborative projects, reflection, and creative expression, students will develop critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a strong sense of identity and belonging within their learning community.

Learning goals

Learners will explore the properties of light and shadow through hands-on activities, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills as they experiment with different materials to observe changes in light and shadow. They will engage in self-directed learning by reflecting on their experiences and using feedback to guide their exploration. Through collaboration with community partners like photographers and theater lighting designers, students will deepen their understanding of how light influences perception. The project culminates in an exhibition where students present their shadow art and performances, reinforcing their sense of identity and belonging within the learning community.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Throughout this learning experience, students will create a variety of products that explore the interplay of light and shadows. They will craft shadow puppets and develop short plays, using these tools to perform and express their understanding of how shadows are formed and manipulated. Additionally, students will design and display shadow art pieces, experimenting with different light sources and materials to create unique patterns and shapes. These creations will culminate in an exhibition where students showcase their shadow art gallery and perform their shadow puppet plays, inviting peers and community partners to engage with their imaginative interpretations of light and shadow.

Launch

To kick off the learning experience, set up a "Light and Shadow Exploration Station" where students can freely interact with various light sources, such as flashlights and lamps, and objects that cast shadows. Encourage them to experiment by placing different objects in the path of the light and observe the shadows they create on a wall or screen. Facilitate a group discussion where students share their observations and initial thoughts on how light and shadows work, sparking curiosity and setting the stage for deeper exploration in the following weeks.

Exhibition

At the culmination of the unit, learners will present "Our Shadow Art Gallery," showcasing their creative works made with light and shadows. This exhibition will feature shadow art pieces and performances of plays using shadow puppets, allowing students to demonstrate their understanding of light and shadow concepts. Community partners, such as photographers and theater lighting designers, will be invited to provide feedback and engage with the students' work, fostering a sense of connection and accomplishment.
