Purpose

This project engages high school students in the vibrant fusion of ASL and hip hop, encouraging exploration of cultural narratives and innovative artistic expression within the Deaf community. Students will investigate the influence of these elements on hip hop, presenting their insights through creative, multimedia formats. Through self-directed learning and critical reflection, students will strengthen their sense of identity and belonging, while enhancing their communication skills in varied contexts.

Learning goals

Students will delve into the cultural significance and artistic expression of ASL within hip hop music, analyzing its impact on the Deaf community. They will create multimedia projects that incorporate digital tools, showcasing their ability to adapt communication for diverse audiences. By engaging in self-directed learning, students will reflect on their identity and growth while employing critical thinking to explore and address complex cultural narratives.

Products

Students will collaboratively create a multimedia presentation that showcases the fusion of ASL and hip hop music, highlighting the cultural narratives and identities within the Deaf community. This presentation will include original ASL interpretations of hip hop songs, digital media elements such as videos and graphics, and reflective essays that explore the impact of the Deaf community on hip hop. By the end of the project, students will host a live performance event where they present their work to peers, teachers, and community members, facilitating a dialogue about the intersection of ASL and hip hop as innovative artistic expressions.

Launch

Begin the project with an engaging workshop led by a Deaf hip hop artist who integrates ASL into their performances. The artist will share personal experiences, demonstrate their craft, and guide students in creating brief hip hop pieces that incorporate ASL. Students will then reflect on how this combination of language and music reshapes conventional narratives and encourages novel artistic expressions. This launch will inspire students to delve into and innovate at the crossroads of ASL and hip hop during the project.

Exhibition

Host a 'Deaf Beats Festival' featuring live performances, art installations, and interactive workshops led by students and local Deaf artists, creating an immersive experience that highlights the fusion of ASL and hip hop culture. Students will present their original ASL-infused hip hop performances, showcasing their exploration of cultural narratives and identities. The festival will include a Q&A session where students discuss their creative process and the impact of the Deaf community on hip hop, fostering dialogue and reflection on new artistic expressions. This event will celebrate students' learning and provide a platform for community engagement and feedback.
