Purpose

This project invites students to creatively explore the intersection of art, storytelling, and historical context by designing a video game character inspired by the Westward Expansion. It encourages students to draw connections between their personal interests and academic content, fostering a deeper understanding of historical narratives and their relevance today. Through hands-on activities and real-world applications, students will develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and self-directed learning skills while engaging with their peers and community in meaningful ways.

Learning goals

Students will develop a deeper understanding of historical events during the Westward Expansion by integrating art and storytelling into the design of a video game character inspired by this era. They will enhance their critical thinking and problem-solving skills through multistep math activities related to resource management. Additionally, students will cultivate self-directed learning and an academic mindset by engaging in reflective practices and leveraging feedback to refine their work, fostering a sense of identity and belonging.
Standards
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.5.7 - Analyze how visual and multimedia elements contribute to the meaning, tone, or beauty of a text (e.g., graphic novel, multimedia presentation of fiction, folktale, myth, poem).
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.5.2 - Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text, including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic; summarize the text.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.5.5 - Include multimedia components (e.g., graphics, sound) and visual displays in presentations when appropriate to enhance the development of main ideas or themes.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will create a unique video game character inspired by a historical figure from the Westward Expansion, integrating art, storytelling, and math problem-solving. They will develop a detailed storyboard or story map outlining their character's journey and challenges, incorporating historical context and personal creativity. The final product will be showcased in a digital presentation during a 'Virtual Character Showcase,' where students will share their designs and narratives with peers and a wider audience.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Virtual Field Trip' to an online museum or historical site focused on the Westward Expansion. During the visit, encourage students to explore exhibits and take notes on historical figures, events, and daily life during that era. After the trip, facilitate a group discussion where students share their insights and initial ideas for their video game characters, setting the stage for their creative journey.

Exhibition

Students will participate in a 'Virtual Character Showcase,' where they will present their digital character designs and storyboards to a broader audience via a class website or video conference. This exhibition will include interactive elements, such as Q&A sessions, where students explain their creative process and the historical context behind their designs. By sharing their work with other classes and community partners, students will gain valuable feedback and insights, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of their own and others' creations.
