Fraction Fun: Real World Adventures!
1-pager
Purpose
This project aims to immerse fourth-grade students in the practical application of fractions through engaging, hands-on activities that connect mathematical concepts to everyday life. By exploring fractions through cooking, crafting, and problem-solving, students will develop critical thinking skills and a deeper understanding of how fractions are used to divide and share resources fairly. The project encourages self-directed learning and reflection, allowing students to monitor their progress and refine their approach while fostering a sense of belonging and identity within the classroom community.
Learning goals
Students will develop a deep understanding of fractions by engaging in real-world applications such as cooking, crafting, and building projects. They will learn to estimate, represent, and solve problems involving addition, subtraction, and multiplication of fractions with like denominators, while also simplifying results. Through hands-on activities, students will enhance their self-directed learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, fostering a sense of identity and belonging within their learning community. They will also gain the ability to apply fractions to everyday situations, making informed decisions and creating fair portions.
Standards
- [Virginia] 4.CE.3.b - Estimate, represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step contextual problems using addition and subtraction with fractions (proper or improper) and/or mixed numbers, having like denominators limited to 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12, and simplify the resulting fraction. Addition and subtraction with fractions may include regrouping.
- [Virginia] 4.CE.3.a - Estimate and determine the sum or difference of two fractions (proper or improper) and/or mixed numbers, having like denominators limited to 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12 (e.g., 3 8 + 3 8 , 21 5 + 4 5 , 7 4 - 5 4 ) and simplify the resulting fraction. Addition and subtraction with fractions may include regrouping.*
- [Virginia] 4.CE.3.c - Solve single-step contextual problems involving multiplication of a whole number, limited to 12 or less, and a unit fraction (e.g., 6 × 1 3 , 1 5 × 8, 2 × 1 10 ), with models.*
Competencies
- Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
- Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
- Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
Products
Throughout the project, students will create a variety of products that demonstrate their understanding of fractions. These include a collaborative mural using fractional parts, a reflection journal documenting their learning journey, and a 'Fraction Board Game' designed to solve fraction problems. By the end of the project, students will have showcased their creations in a final exhibition, sharing their insights and receiving feedback from peers and teachers. These products will serve as tangible evidence of their ability to apply fractions in real-world scenarios.
Launch
Begin the project with a 'Fraction Feast' where students work in teams to prepare simple recipes using fractional measurements. Each team will share their creations with classmates, discussing how fractions were used to ensure fair portions. This hands-on activity will spark curiosity and set the stage for exploring how fractions are relevant in everyday situations.
Exhibition
Students will host a 'Fraction Fair' where they present their Fraction Board Games alongside their artwork from the Fraction Art Gallery. They will demonstrate their understanding of fractions by explaining the rules and strategies of their games to classmates and teachers. Additionally, students will showcase their reflection journals, highlighting their learning journey and the challenges they overcame. This event will include interactive stations where attendees can play the games and engage with the art, fostering a collaborative and celebratory atmosphere.
