Purpose

This project immerses 5th-grade students in the dynamic processes of the rock cycle, fostering an understanding of Earth's geological history through interactive and hands-on activities. By engaging in role-play, creative storytelling, and peer collaboration, students will develop the skills to identify, classify, and narrate the journey of rocks. The purpose is to cultivate curiosity and critical thinking as students explore the natural world, culminating in a 'Rock Show and Tell' where they confidently share their discoveries and personal connections.

Learning goals

Students will explore and understand the formation and classification of rocks and minerals, gaining insights into Earth's history through hands-on investigation and creative expression. They will develop skills in scientific observation and critical thinking by identifying rock types and participating in collaborative activities like the 'Rock Detective' critique. Through the creation of a 'Rock Cycle Comic Strip,' students will demonstrate their understanding of the rock cycle processes and transformations, using storytelling to communicate their knowledge effectively.

Products

Students will create a 'Rock Cycle Comic Strip' that illustrates the journey of a rock through the rock cycle, using creative storytelling to depict each stage and transformation. Additionally, students will curate a personal rock collection for the 'Rock Show and Tell,' where they will present and explain the origin and classification of each specimen. Throughout the project, students will also develop a 'Rock Detective' journal, documenting their observations, identifications, and feedback received during the critique and revision process.

Launch

Kick off the project with an immersive 'Rock Cycle Simulation' where students embody different stages of the rock cycle. Use props like sand, water, and heat lamps to simulate natural processes such as erosion, sedimentation, and metamorphosis. Encourage students to move around the classroom as they transition from one rock type to another, narrating their journey and transformations. This interactive experience will ignite curiosity and set the stage for deeper exploration into the rock cycle.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Rock Show and Tell' event where they present their curated rock collections to classmates, teachers, and family members. Each student will explain the origin and classification of their rocks, using scientific terminology and personal anecdotes to convey the significance of their findings. The event will include interactive stations where visitors can engage with the rock samples, ask questions, and learn about the rock cycle through student-created comic strips displayed around the room.
