Purpose

The purpose of this project is to immerse pre-k students in the world of sports through engaging, hands-on activities that promote physical development, teamwork, and self-reflection. By participating in cooperative games and interacting with community partners, students will build foundational gross motor skills while learning the value of collaboration and communication. This experience aims to foster a sense of belonging and self-efficacy, encouraging students to explore their identities and reflect on how sports can enrich their lives. Through creating a Sports Storybook and participating in a Mini Olympics, students will celebrate their achievements and share their learning journey with peers and family.

Learning goals

The learning goals for this project include developing self-directed learning by encouraging students to use feedback and self-reflection during sports activities. Students will build an academic mindset by establishing a sense of belonging and identity through team play and sports exploration. They will enhance critical thinking and problem-solving skills by engaging in cooperative play, learning to work as a team, and understanding how sports can positively impact their lives. Additionally, students will improve their gross motor skills through interactive games and sports challenges.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Throughout the project, students will create a 'Sports Storybook,' where each child contributes a page with drawings and simple sentences describing their sports experiences. This storybook will be showcased during the 'Mini Olympics' exhibition. Additionally, students will contribute to a 'Sports Feedback Wall,' using stickers or drawings to share their reflections on the activities, promoting self-directed learning and critical thinking.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience with a dynamic 'Sports Adventure Day' where pre-k students explore various sports through interactive stations. Each station will feature a different sport, guided by older students and local athletes, offering hands-on engagement with running, jumping, and throwing activities. This event will spark curiosity and enthusiasm, setting the stage for cooperative play and skill development throughout the project.

Exhibition

At the end of the four-week project, host a 'Mini Olympics' where pre-k students can showcase their newly acquired sports skills. Invite parents and upper-grade students to cheer on the young athletes as they participate in fun, friendly competitions. Display the 'Sports Storybook' created by the students, allowing them to share their sports adventures through drawings and simple sentences. This event will celebrate their achievements and foster a sense of community and belonging.
