Purpose

The purpose of this project is to immerse 5th-grade students in an engaging, hands-on exploration of the body's systems, fostering a deeper understanding of their functions and interconnections. Through interactive activities and model-building, students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills while connecting scientific concepts to real-world applications. This experience aims to enhance students' self-directed learning and academic mindset, encouraging them to reflect on their learning journey and communicate their discoveries effectively.

Learning goals

Students will explore the interconnectedness of the body's systems, focusing on their structure and function, through hands-on model building and collaborative problem-solving activities. They will develop critical thinking skills by engaging with complex questions about bodily functions and systems, using innovative approaches to create and present their findings. Throughout the project, students will cultivate self-directed learning by seeking and applying feedback, reflecting on their progress, and adapting their strategies to enhance understanding and communication.
Standards
  • [Computer Science Teachers Association] 1B-CS-01 - Describe how internal and external parts of computing devices function to form a system.
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] 3-5.AG.4.1 - A system is a group of related parts that make up a whole and can carry out functions its individual parts cannot.
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] LS.1.C - Organization for Matter and Energy Flow in Organisms
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will create a series of interactive models representing each body system, culminating in a detailed working model of the respiratory system using balloons and straws. Throughout the project, students will also develop diagrams and informational posters to accompany their models, providing visual and written explanations of each system's function. These products will be showcased at the 'Body Systems Fair,' where students will present their work and engage with visitors through live demonstrations and Q&A sessions.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Body Systems Mystery Day' where students receive mystery envelopes containing clues about different body systems. In small groups, students will collaborate to solve the mystery of how these systems function and interconnect to keep the body operating. This engaging activity will stimulate curiosity and set the stage for deeper exploration and hands-on learning throughout the project.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Body Systems Fair' where they will create interactive booths for each body system. These booths will feature models, diagrams, and live demonstrations that illustrate the functions and interactions of the systems. Parents, teachers, and other students will be invited to explore the booths, ask questions, and engage with the students, who will act as experts on their chosen system. This exhibition will provide a platform for students to showcase their understanding and communication skills in a dynamic and engaging way.
