Purpose

This project aims to engage 9th-grade students in a comprehensive exploration of sound and noise pollution, integrating environmental science with ethnic studies. Through hands-on experiences, students will investigate the impact of human activities on natural and cultural soundscapes, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. By collaborating with community partners, students will create meaningful solutions that promote environmental sustainability and cultural preservation, while developing self-directed learning and academic mindsets.

Learning goals

Students will develop skills in sound measurement and data analysis by creating sound maps of their local environments, integrating scientific and cultural perspectives. They will engage in critical thinking and problem-solving to design solutions that mitigate sound pollution's impact on biodiversity and cultural heritage. Through collaborative art installations and community events, students will explore the cultural significance of sound, fostering a sense of identity and belonging. By reflecting on their learning journey, students will enhance their self-directed learning abilities and academic mindset, preparing them to address real-world environmental challenges.
Standards
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] HS-LS2-7 - Design, evaluate, and refine a solution for reducing the impacts of human activities on the environment and biodiversity.
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] HS-LS2-7 - Design, evaluate, and refine a solution for reducing the impacts of human activities on the environment and biodiversity.
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] HS-ESS3-4 - Evaluate or refine a technological solution that reduces impacts of human activities on natural systems.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will develop a digital interactive map that overlays their sound recordings with geographic data, offering an engaging tool for exploring the impact of noise pollution on various environments. They will also create a collaborative art installation that visually and audibly represents the effects of sound pollution on cultural and natural spaces, inviting public interaction and reflection. Additionally, students will organize and guide a community sound walk event, incorporating live performances and storytelling to emphasize the cultural and environmental significance of the sounds they have studied.

Launch

Kick off the project with a dynamic 'Sound Art Jam' session where students use instruments and everyday objects to collaboratively create spontaneous sound-based art pieces. Follow this with a 'Cultural Sound Mixer' event, inviting community members to share and discuss traditional and contemporary sounds from various cultures. These activities will spark creativity, engagement, and set the stage for understanding sound's role in cultural heritage and environmental science.

Exhibition

Students will curate an 'Eco-Acoustic Gallery' at a local community center, showcasing their sound maps, art installations, and multimedia reflections to engage the public and gather feedback. A 'Cultural Soundscape Fair' will feature interactive booths where visitors can experience the effects of sound pollution through immersive activities and personal stories. Additionally, a 'Soundscapes Symposium' will be held, allowing students to present their work to community members and partners, fostering dialogue on solutions to sound pollution.
