Purpose

This project aims to engage students in a transformative learning experience by redesigning a local historical building to serve contemporary community needs while preserving its historical essence. Through hands-on application of algebra and construction principles, students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. By collaborating with community partners and analyzing local population trends, students will create designs that reflect both historical significance and modern utility, fostering a sense of belonging and identity within their community.

Learning goals

Students will apply algebraic concepts and construction principles to design and construct a scale model of a redesigned historical building, integrating historical preservation with modern community needs. They will engage with community partners to gather insights and feedback, enhancing their understanding of local population trends and their impact on community development. Through self-directed learning and critical reflection, students will develop a sense of identity and belonging, while honing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills to address complex, authentic questions relevant to their community.
Standards
  • [Indiana] VA:Cr2.3.IIa - Redesign an object, system, place, or design in response to contemporary issues.
  • [Indiana] AAII.MAA.3 - Model real-world phenomena using linear programming and matrices.
  • [Indiana] GHW.3.5 - Analyze population trends in the local community, and suggest the impact of these trends on the future of the community in relation to issues such as development, employment, health, cultural diversity, schools, political representation, and sanitation. (E)
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will create detailed scale models of the redesigned historical building, incorporating both historical architectural elements and modern features. They will also develop multimedia presentations that document their design process, including interviews with community partners and reflections on their project journey. Additionally, students will produce statistical reports analyzing community needs and preferences, which will inform their design decisions. These products will be showcased during the 'Historic Transformation Gala', allowing students to present their work in a formal setting and engage with community members.

Launch

Begin the project with a 'History Meets Future' walking tour of the local historical building, guided by experts from Indiana Landmarks. During the tour, students will explore the building's unique architectural features and discuss potential redesign ideas with community partners. This immersive experience will spark curiosity and provide a foundational understanding of the building's historical significance and the possibilities for its transformation to meet modern community needs.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Historic Transformation Gala' at the actual historical building, where they will present their scale models and multimedia projects in a formal setting. During the event, students will engage with attendees, including community members and partners, to discuss their design process and the integration of historical and modern elements. The exhibition will feature interactive stations where guests can view detailed models and listen to student reflections, fostering a dialogue on the importance of balancing preservation with contemporary community needs. Refreshments will be served, creating an inviting atmosphere for meaningful exchanges and celebration of student achievements.
