The purpose of this learning experience is to engage students in a collaborative, hands-on project that integrates artistic creativity, technical skills, and digital tools to produce a stop-motion video. Through designing and constructing characters and sets, students will explore visual storytelling techniques and develop their ability to convey compelling narratives. This project fosters critical thinking, self-directed learning, and a sense of identity and belonging, as students reflect on their creative processes and contributions to the group.
Learning goals
Students will develop and apply sewing and design skills to create unique plush characters and sets, enhancing their understanding of visual storytelling. They will utilize digital tools to design promotional materials, integrating principles of layout, color theory, and typography. Through collaborative group work, students will engage in critical thinking and problem-solving to navigate the complexities of stop-motion filmmaking, refining their narratives and technical execution. The project will also foster self-directed learning, encouraging students to reflect on their creative processes and personal growth through peer and community feedback.

Competencies
Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
Products
Throughout this learning experience, students will create a variety of products that showcase their creativity and technical skills. Each student will design and sew a plush or puppet character, contributing to a group-created stop-motion video trailer that highlights their collaborative storytelling. Additionally, students will produce a film poster using digital design tools, applying principles of layout and visual marketing. The final products will include a completed stop-motion video, a professionally designed film poster, and a reflective portfolio documenting their creative process and growth.
Launch
Kick off the project with a "Film Inspiration Day," where students watch a curated selection of professional stop-motion films, analyzing the storytelling techniques, character designs, and set constructions used. Follow this with a showcase of exemplary student work from previous years to highlight achievable goals and inspire creativity. Facilitate a discussion on how these examples can inform their own projects, encouraging students to brainstorm initial ideas and form their project groups based on shared interests and strengths.
Exhibition
Host a film premiere night where students present their stop-motion videos to an audience of peers, teachers, and community partners. Following the screenings, facilitate a Q&A session where students discuss their creative process, challenges they overcame, and insights gained. Encourage audience members to provide feedback and engage in discussions that celebrate the students' achievements and growth throughout the project.
