Purpose

The purpose of this project is to immerse fifth-grade students in a dynamic, hands-on learning experience where they design and create arcade games that illustrate the principles of forces and motion. Through collaborative teamwork and the engineering design process, students will deepen their understanding of scientific concepts while enhancing their literacy and math skills. By engaging with community partners and presenting their work, students will develop critical communication abilities and build a sense of identity and belonging within their community.

Learning goals

Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of forces and motion by applying scientific concepts to design and build arcade games. They will enhance their literacy skills by crafting detailed informational pieces and engaging presentations to effectively communicate their learning to a community audience. Through self-directed learning and reflection, students will cultivate critical thinking and problem-solving skills, while fostering a sense of identity and belonging within their learning community.
Standards
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] PS.2.A - Forces and Motion
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] 3-5.AF.6.4 - Apply scientific ideas to solve design problems.
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] 3-5.AF.1.5 - Define a simple design problem that can be solved through the development of an object, tool, process, or system and includes several criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will design and build interactive arcade games using recycled materials, incorporating simple machines to demonstrate principles of forces and motion. They will create detailed informational pieces and video presentations to explain the science concepts behind their games, enhancing their communication skills. Additionally, students will produce reflective journals or video diaries to document their learning journey and personal growth throughout the project.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Cardboard Challenge Day' where students participate in a series of hands-on mini-challenges. These challenges will involve using cardboard and simple machines to creatively solve problems. This collaborative and interactive experience will spark excitement and set the stage for students to begin conceptualizing their arcade games, fostering teamwork and innovative thinking from the outset.

Exhibition

Host a 'Family Science Night' where students present their arcade games to family and friends, offering guided tours and interactive demonstrations. This event will allow students to showcase their creativity and understanding of forces and motion, engaging the community in their learning journey. By creating a dynamic and interactive environment, students can effectively communicate the science behind their projects and receive valuable feedback from attendees.
