Purpose

In this project, you'll explore the concept of scale by designing and constructing a soccer field model. You'll apply mathematical principles to create accurate scale drawings and 3D models, deepening your understanding of geometry and division. Through hands-on activities and reflective journaling, you'll develop critical thinking skills and gain insights into how scale factors are used in real-world applications. This experience will also foster self-directed learning as you engage with feedback and refine your work.

Learning goals

Engage in creating scale drawings and models of soccer fields to deepen your understanding of division and scale factors. Develop self-directed learning skills by reflecting on your progress and utilizing feedback to guide your project. Enhance your critical thinking by exploring innovative solutions to design challenges and applying these skills to real-world contexts. Strengthen your academic mindset by connecting mathematical concepts to your identity and community through the creation of a meaningful, tangible product.
Standards
  • [Common Core] CCSS.Math.Content.7.G.A.1 - Solve problems involving scale drawings of geometric figures, including computing actual lengths and areas from a scale drawing and reproducing a scale drawing at a different scale.
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] MS-ESS1-3 - Analyze and interpret data to determine scale properties of objects in the solar system.
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] MS-ESS1-3 - Analyze and interpret data to determine scale properties of objects in the solar system.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Throughout this learning experience, construct a scaled blueprint of a soccer field, using graph paper or digital tools, to visually represent your understanding of division and scale factors. By the end, create a detailed 3D model of the soccer field using materials like cardboard or clay, ensuring accurate representation of dimensions and key features. Facilitate a gallery walk to showcase your models, providing and receiving feedback to refine your understanding and presentation skills.

Launch

Begin by visiting a local soccer field to observe and measure its dimensions, discussing how scale factors are used in its design. Capture photos and sketches, noting key features and their proportions. Back in the classroom, brainstorm how these observations can inform the creation of your own scaled soccer field blueprint.

Exhibition

Organize a showcase event where you present your 3D soccer field models and scaled blueprints to classmates, teachers, and family members. Facilitate a gallery walk where you can view and provide feedback on each other's work, focusing on the accuracy of scale factors and creativity in model construction. Prepare a brief presentation to explain your design process, the challenges you encountered, and how you applied division and scale factors to solve real-world problems.
