Purpose

The purpose of this lesson is to deepen students' understanding of equivalent fractions and fraction comparisons through collaborative, hands-on activities. By engaging in group projects using number lines and fraction bars, students will develop critical thinking skills and learn to justify their reasoning. This experiential approach aims to foster positive relationships, encourage active listening, and empower students to articulate their understanding in creative ways, culminating in a Fraction Storytelling Festival that showcases their learning.

Learning goals

Students will collaboratively explore and identify equivalent fractions using number lines and fraction bars, engaging in discussions to justify their reasoning. They will develop critical thinking skills by comparing fractions with different numerators and denominators, using symbols to express their conclusions. Through storytelling and visual presentations, students will demonstrate their understanding of fraction comparisons and equivalence, fostering communication and collaboration skills.
Standards
  • [Kentucky] KY.4.NF.1 - Understand and generate equivalent fractions.
  • [Kentucky] KY.4.NF.2 - Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators using the symbols <, =, or >. Recognize comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Justify the conclusions.
Competencies
  • Productive Collaborator - Engages with others to achieve a common goal through building positive relationships, actively listening, showing empathy, and making individual contributions to a larger group.
  • Critical Thinker - Thinks deeply and makes informed decisions to create solutions or new understanding supported by relevant and reliable evidence.
  • Empowered Learner - Demonstrates mastery and application of academic competencies. Develops the skills and dispositions to persist through difficulties and plan for a future of self-improvement.

Products

Students will work collaboratively to produce a short video documentary that captures their process of discovering equivalent fractions and comparing them using number lines and fraction bars. This documentary will serve as both a learning tool and a showcase of their understanding, to be screened during the Fraction Storytelling Festival. Additionally, each group will create visual presentations using fraction bars and number lines, which they will use to explain their reasoning and demonstrate their mastery of the concepts to the class.

Launch

Begin with a hands-on activity where students use colored fraction bars to explore and visualize equivalent fractions. Set up stations with number lines and fraction bars, encouraging students to manipulate and compare fractions physically. Prompt students to share their observations with peers, fostering an initial discussion on strategies for identifying equivalent fractions and making comparisons.

Exhibition

Invite families and community members to the 'Fraction Storytelling Festival,' where students will present their stories or skits that incorporate fraction comparisons and equivalence. Each group will use visual aids like fraction bars and number lines to support their narratives, ensuring clarity and engagement. The festival will also feature a screening of student-created video documentaries, showcasing their journey in understanding fractions. This event not only celebrates student learning but also fosters community involvement and appreciation for mathematical concepts.
