Purpose

The purpose of this project is to engage 9th-grade students in a comprehensive exploration of international diplomacy through the lens of conflict resolution and peacebuilding. By researching real-world conflicts and developing innovative peace plans, students will enhance their essay writing skills and deepen their understanding of cultural nuances and communication in diplomacy. This hands-on, collaborative experience aims to foster critical thinking, self-directed learning, and a sense of global citizenship, culminating in dynamic presentations and simulations that showcase their insights and solutions.

Learning goals

Products

Students will collaboratively develop comprehensive peace plans addressing real-world conflicts, culminating in detailed written proposals and visual presentations. Each group will create a digital portfolio showcasing their research process, cultural analyses, and proposed solutions, including multimedia elements such as infographics or video summaries. The final products will be presented during the 'International Peace Conference' and 'Diplomatic Simulation Day,' where students will engage with an audience and receive feedback on their innovative approaches to diplomacy and conflict resolution.

Launch

Kick off the project with an immersive "Conflict and Peace Day," where students engage in interactive stations that simulate real-world diplomatic scenarios. Each station represents a different aspect of international conflict, such as cultural misunderstandings, resource disputes, and historical grievances. Students rotate through the stations, experiencing firsthand the complexities of diplomacy and peacebuilding, setting the stage for their upcoming research and peace plan development.

Exhibition

Host an 'International Peace Conference' where students present their peace plans to an audience of parents, teachers, and local community leaders, followed by a Q&A session to explore the nuances of their proposals. Organize a 'Diplomatic Simulation Day' where students participate in a live simulation of peace negotiations, with observers from the school community invited to watch and provide feedback on the strategies and outcomes. These events will allow students to showcase their understanding of diplomacy and their ability to propose innovative solutions to complex global conflicts.
