The purpose of this project is to engage 6th-grade students in developing specialized skills and game strategies through a hands-on approach to sports training. By collaborating with community partners and exploring the biomechanics of sports movements, students will create personalized training plans that enhance their individual performance. This experience fosters critical thinking, self-directed learning, and a sense of belonging, as students reflect on their progress and showcase their understanding in a Sports Science Fair and Game Strategy Tournament.
Learning goals
Students will develop a comprehensive training plan that enhances their specialized skills and game strategies for a chosen sport, applying biomechanical principles learned through collaboration with sports science experts. They will engage in self-directed learning by utilizing feedback and reflection to refine their plans and build self-awareness in both sports and personal growth contexts. Through critical thinking and problem-solving, students will address real-world challenges in sports training, fostering a sense of belonging and identity within their community.
Standards
[North Carolina] PE.6-8.MS.1.2 - Apply game strategies and tactics during game play.
[North Carolina] PE.6-8.MS.1.3 - Demonstrate competency in specialized skills and/or combination skills for individual performance activities and/or outdoor pursuits.
[North Carolina] PE.6-8.MS.1.1 - Demonstrate competency in specialized skills and combination skills for sports and games.
Competencies
Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
Products
Throughout the project, students will develop personalized training plans that incorporate specialized skills and game strategies for their chosen sport. By the end, they will present these plans at the 'Sports Science Fair,' showcasing their understanding of biomechanics and strategic thinking. Additionally, students will participate in the 'Game Strategy Tournament,' applying their skills in real-world scenarios and demonstrating their competency in sports tactics and performance.
Launch
Kick off the project with an interactive sports clinic led by local athletes or coaches, where students participate in various skill-building drills and games. This hands-on experience will ignite excitement and provide a practical context for the essential question. Conclude the launch with a brainstorming session where students identify key skills and strategies they observed, setting the stage for developing their personalized training plans.
Exhibition
Students will showcase their learning journey by participating in a 'Game Strategy Tournament.' During this event, they will apply their developed tactics in friendly matches, demonstrating their understanding of game strategies and specialized skills. Family members and community partners will be invited to cheer on the students and engage in post-game discussions, providing an opportunity for students to articulate their learning and receive feedback.
