Purpose

This project immerses students in the art and discipline of archery, using the "11 Steps to Archery Success" as a framework to enhance precision, consistency, and focus. By engaging in hands-on practice and reflection, students will draw connections between archery and other life skills, fostering self-directed learning, critical thinking, and effective communication. The project culminates in a student-led exhibition, allowing participants to share their journey and insights with the community, thereby reinforcing their sense of identity and belonging.

Learning goals

Students will master the '11 Steps to Archery Success,' enhancing their precision and consistency in archery, while drawing connections to skill development in other areas of life. They will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills by exploring how archery principles apply to focus and discipline beyond the sport. Through collaboration, students will design and implement an archery-themed workshop, fostering effective communication and leadership. Self-directed learning will be emphasized as students reflect on their progress and personal growth, both academically and socio-emotionally. The project will culminate in students confidently presenting their learning journey and insights at the 'Archery Showcase and Reflection Night.'
Standards
  • [National Core Arts Standards] Anchor Standard 1 - Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] Anchor Standard 5 - Develop and refine artistic techniques and work for presentation.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] DA:Pr5.1.I.c - Collaborate with peers to establish and implement a rehearsal plan to meet performance goals. Use a variety of strategies to analyze and evaluate performances of self and others (for example, use video recordings of practice to analyze the difference between the way movements look and how they feel to match performance with visual affect). Articulate performance goals and justify reasons for selecting particular practice strategies.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.

Products

Students will produce a documentary-style video that chronicles their journey in mastering the '11 Steps to Archery Success,' featuring interviews that highlight how archery's discipline and focus have impacted their broader life skills. Additionally, they will maintain a reflection journal to document daily practice and draw connections to their personal growth. As part of a collaborative effort, students will design and facilitate an archery-themed workshop for younger students, integrating their learning and teaching experiences. The culmination of these efforts will be showcased during an 'Archery Showcase and Reflection Night,' where students present their video portfolios and share insights with the community.

Launch

Begin the project with an immersive "Archery Discovery Day," where students participate in a hands-on archery workshop led by a professional archer. This session will introduce them to the '11 Steps to Archery Success' through interactive demonstrations and practice opportunities. Students will also engage in a group discussion to brainstorm how these principles can be applied to other areas of their lives, setting the stage for their documentary video project.

Exhibition

Host an 'Archery Showcase and Reflection Night' where students present their video portfolios to peers, family, and community members. During the event, students will share insights on how mastering the '11 Steps to Archery Success' has influenced their personal growth and skill development. The evening will include live demonstrations of archery techniques, student-led workshops for attendees, and interactive discussions that highlight the connections between archery principles and broader life skills.
