Purpose

This project aims to cultivate high school students' precision, consistency, and focus through the structured practice of archery. By mastering the '11 Steps to Archery Success,' students will develop self-directed learning skills, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities that extend beyond archery to other life challenges. The project fosters a sense of identity and belonging, encouraging students to reflect on their personal growth and apply the discipline learned in archery to enhance their academic and socio-emotional development.

Learning goals

Students will master the '11 Steps to Archery Success,' enhancing their precision and consistency in archery while drawing parallels to personal skill development in other areas. They will engage in self-directed learning through reflective journaling, documenting their progress and insights. By collaborating with peers and analyzing video recordings, students will refine their techniques and articulate performance goals. The project will foster critical thinking as students explore how archery principles can enhance focus and discipline in various aspects of life, culminating in a documentary video and community showcase.
Standards
  • [National Core Arts Standards] Anchor Standard 1 - Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] Anchor Standard 5 - Develop and refine artistic techniques and work for presentation.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] DA:Pr5.1.I.c - Collaborate with peers to establish and implement a rehearsal plan to meet performance goals. Use a variety of strategies to analyze and evaluate performances of self and others (for example, use video recordings of practice to analyze the difference between the way movements look and how they feel to match performance with visual affect). Articulate performance goals and justify reasons for selecting particular practice strategies.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will create a comprehensive video portfolio documenting their progression through the '11 Steps to Archery Success,' showcasing their improvements and reflections on how these skills translate to other life areas. Additionally, they will produce a documentary-style video featuring interviews where they discuss the impact of archery discipline on their approach to various challenges. These products will culminate in an 'Archery Showcase and Reflection Night,' where students present their work to peers, family, and community members, fostering a deeper understanding of personal growth and skill development.

Launch

Begin the project with an interactive archery demonstration led by a professional archer, who will showcase the '11 Steps to Archery Success' in action. Following the demonstration, facilitate a hands-on workshop where students try out the steps under guided supervision, allowing them to experience the fundamentals firsthand. Conclude the launch with a group discussion on initial observations and personal goals for the project, setting the stage for deeper exploration and skill development.

Exhibition

Students will host an 'Archery Showcase and Reflection Night,' where they present their video portfolios to peers, family, and community members. This event will highlight their mastery of the '11 Steps to Archery Success' and explore how these skills have influenced their personal growth. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with students through Q&A sessions, fostering a deeper understanding of the impact of archery techniques on broader life skills.
