Purpose

This project aims to engage high school students in critical exploration and discussion of ethical issues through hands-on, real-world experiences. By participating in debates, creating art installations, and leading community conferences, students will develop critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and self-directed learning abilities. The project will foster a sense of identity and belonging as students navigate complex ethical dilemmas and articulate their perspectives, ultimately preparing them to contribute thoughtfully to their communities.

Learning goals

Students will develop the ability to critically analyze and debate ethical issues by exploring real-world scenarios and engaging in structured debates. They will enhance their self-directed learning skills through peer feedback and self-reflection, fostering a deeper understanding of their personal growth and academic mindset. Through the creation of an interactive art installation, students will apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to represent ethical challenges and solutions, promoting community engagement and dialogue.
Standards
  • [National Council for the Social Studies] D4.4.9-12 - Critique the use of claims and evidence in arguments for credibility.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] TH:Re8.HS2.c - Debate and distinguish multiple aesthetics, preferences, and beliefs through participation in and observation of drama/theatre work.
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] 9-12.AF.7.1 - Compare and evaluate competing arguments or design solutions in light of currently accepted explanations, new evidence, limitations (e.g., trade-offs), constraints, and ethical issues.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will create an interactive art installation that visually represents the ethical challenges and solutions they have identified during their community exploration. This installation will serve as a centerpiece at the Student-Led Ethics Conference, inviting attendees to engage and contribute their thoughts. Throughout the project, students will also develop and refine their debate presentations, culminating in a formal debate where they articulate and defend their ethical positions on real-world issues. Additionally, students will compile a portfolio documenting their journey, including reflections, peer feedback, and revised arguments, showcasing their growth and learning process.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Real-World Ethics Scavenger Hunt' where students venture into their local community to identify and document ethical issues. They will capture evidence through photos, interviews, and notes, which will serve as the foundation for their project work. Upon returning, students will share their findings and engage in a collaborative discussion to brainstorm potential solutions, setting the stage for their deeper exploration of ethics and debate.

Exhibition

Students will organize and host a 'Student-Led Ethics Conference,' where they will take on roles as speakers, moderators, and panelists. They will present their debates and lead workshops on ethical issues, engaging attendees from the school and local community. The conference will also feature an interactive art installation created by the students, which visually represents the ethical challenges and solutions they identified. Attendees will be invited to contribute their thoughts and reflections, fostering a collaborative dialogue on ethics.
