Purpose

This project aims to immerse 7th-grade students in a hands-on exploration of the Five Pillars of Islam, fostering a deeper understanding of their historical significance and contemporary relevance. By engaging with local Muslim community members and academic experts, students will develop critical thinking skills and cultural empathy. Through creating a documentary and participating in a virtual pilgrimage, students will connect historical practices to modern global interactions, enhancing their ability to analyze and reflect on cultural diffusion and globalization.

Learning goals

Students will explore the historical influence of the Five Pillars of Islam on state-building, trade, and cultural interactions in Afro-Eurasia from 600-1600. They will develop critical thinking skills by analyzing historical evidence and drawing connections to contemporary issues of cultural diffusion and globalization. Through engaging with community partners and creating a documentary, students will deepen their understanding of cultural diversity and demonstrate respect and empathy across differences.

  • [Kentucky] 7.H.CO.1 - Explain how religion influenced state-building, trade and cultural interactions between 600-1600.
  • [Kentucky] 7.I.Q.1 - Develop compelling questions, focusing on the growth and expansion of civilizations from 600-1600.
Competencies

  • Engaged Citizen - Shows respect and empathy across differences, embraces diversity of opinion, seeks cultural understanding, participates in the democratic process to challenge the status quo, and makes a positive impact on their community and the world.

Products

Students will produce a short documentary film that captures interviews with local Muslim community members discussing the contemporary practice and historical significance of the Five Pillars of Islam. This film will integrate historical research and personal narratives, offering a nuanced perspective on the Pillars' influence on cultural diffusion and globalization. Additionally, students will maintain reflective journals, connecting their learning to modern societal issues, culminating in a comprehensive understanding of the historical impacts on today's world.

Launch

Begin the project with a 'Virtual Pilgrimage Experience' using VR headsets, allowing students to embark on a simulated Hajj journey. This immersive experience will provide a vivid introduction to the Five Pillars of Islam and their cultural significance. Following the VR journey, facilitate a group discussion where students can share their initial thoughts and questions, setting the stage for deeper inquiry into the historical and contemporary impacts of the Five Pillars.

Exhibition

Host a community film screening event where students present their short documentary films to classmates, teachers, family members, and local community members, including those interviewed. Set up an interactive Q&A session after the screenings, allowing students to discuss their research process, insights gained, and the connections they've made between historical and contemporary practices. Invite the panelists from the university's religious studies department to provide feedback and further context, creating a rich dialogue between students and experts.
