Purpose

This project engages students in a dynamic exploration of the events leading up to the American Revolution by leveraging the popular TikTok format to foster creativity and historical understanding. Through hands-on activities, students collaboratively create and present short videos that encapsulate key historical moments, enhancing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The project aims to connect past events with contemporary issues, encouraging students to reflect on their relevance today while building a sense of identity and belonging within their learning community.

Learning goals

Students will explore and understand the key events and decisions that heightened tensions between the American colonies and Great Britain, leading to the Revolutionary War. They will engage in self-directed learning by using feedback and reflection to create TikTok-style videos that accurately and creatively depict these historical events. Through this process, students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, considering modern perspectives and social issues. Additionally, they will build a sense of identity and belonging by connecting historical events to their own experiences and communities.

Products

Students will produce a series of TikTok-style videos that creatively reenact key events and decisions leading to the American Revolution. These videos will serve as a visual and engaging representation of historical tensions, allowing students to explore and express historical narratives in a modern format. Additionally, students will participate in a 'Colonial Escape Room' experience, culminating in the creation of puzzle solutions and reflections on their learning journey. The project will conclude with a 'Historical TikTok Awards Ceremony,' where students will present their videos to a panel and receive feedback, fostering a sense of achievement and community engagement.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience with a 'Colonial Escape Room' activity, where students work in teams to solve puzzles and riddles based on key events and policies that led to the American Revolution. This immersive experience sets the stage for understanding the escalating tensions between the American colonies and Great Britain. It encourages collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills as students navigate through historical challenges, setting the tone for their TikTok-style video projects.

Exhibition

Host a 'Historical TikTok Awards Ceremony' where students showcase their videos to an audience that includes classmates, teachers, and invited community members such as local historians. Create an engaging atmosphere with award categories like 'Most Creative' and 'Best Historical Accuracy,' allowing students to receive feedback and recognition for their work. This event not only celebrates students' creativity and understanding but also fosters a sense of community and connection to historical narratives.
