Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to enable students to express their identity and sense of belonging through poetry, using sensory details and personal memories. Students will deepen their understanding of how words and phrases can convey rhythm and meaning, while engaging in self-directed learning and critical reflection. By creating and sharing their 'Where I'm From' poems, students will connect with their peers and explore innovative approaches to representing their experiences authentically.

Learning goals

Students will explore and articulate their sense of identity and belonging through the creation of a 'Where I'm From' poem, using sensory details and personal memories. They will develop critical thinking skills by analyzing how these elements convey meaning and emotion in poetry. Through peer feedback and self-reflection, students will enhance their ability to express personal experiences creatively and effectively.

Standards
  • [National Core Arts Standards] MU:Cr3.2.1.a - With limited guidance, convey expressive intent for a specific purpose by presenting a final version of personal musical ideas to peers or informal audience.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.7 - Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., explore a number of "how-to" books on a given topic and use them to write a sequence of instructions).
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.2.4 - Describe how words and phrases (e.g., regular beats, alliteration, rhymes, repeated lines) supply rhythm and meaning in a story, poem, or song.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will craft a 'Where I'm From' poem that vividly captures their personal memories and sensory experiences. They will also produce a visual collage that complements their poem, using images, textures, and colors to enhance the sensory details and themes expressed in their writing. These final products will be shared during a class 'Poetry Cafe' event, where students present their work and engage in reflective discussions with peers.

Launch

Transform the classroom into a 'Poetry Cafe' where students gather in a cozy, inviting space to listen to famous 'Where I'm From' poems. Encourage students to engage in a lively discussion about the sensory details and personal memories that make these poems resonate. Follow this by a brainstorming session where students jot down sensory details and memories that are meaningful to them, setting the stage for their own poetic creations.

Exhibition

Host a 'Where I'm From' Poetry Showcase where students present their poems and accompanying visual collages to classmates, teachers, and family members. Create an inviting atmosphere with soft lighting and background music to mimic a cozy cafe setting. Encourage attendees to leave positive comments and reflections on sticky notes for each poem, fostering a sense of community and appreciation for diverse experiences.
