The purpose of this learning experience is to cultivate a school environment where every student feels a sense of belonging and connection. Through hands-on projects and community engagement, students will explore and celebrate diversity, fostering mutual respect and understanding. This initiative aims to empower students to reflect on their identities, collaborate across grade levels, and contribute to a more inclusive community.
Learning goals
The learning goals for this project include fostering a sense of belonging and understanding of diversity through active participation in community storytelling and peer mentorship programs. Students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills by exploring authentic, community-based questions and engaging in role-playing activities that emphasize diverse perspectives. They will enhance their self-directed learning and academic mindset by compiling a 'Diversity and Belonging Portfolio' and participating in reflection circles, showcasing their growth and insights. Additionally, students will improve their communication skills by creating a podcast and participating in a 'Diversity Dialogue Panel,' sharing their findings and experiences with a wider audience.

Products
Throughout the project, students will create a 'Culture and Belonging' zine, showcasing their artwork, poetry, and essays that reflect their personal and collective experiences with diversity and inclusion. Additionally, they will develop a digital 'Belonging Map,' plotting stories and experiences from various community members, accessible via a QR code displayed in the school. These products will serve as tangible representations of their learning journey, fostering a sense of pride and accomplishment while facilitating ongoing dialogue about belonging and diversity.
Launch
Begin with a 'Voices of Belonging' podcast project, where students interview community members about their experiences with diversity and belonging. This activity will engage students in inquiry and storytelling, helping them connect with the community and understand its dynamics. By launching the project with real-world interactions, students will be inspired to explore the essential question and set the stage for meaningful learning throughout the four weeks.
Exhibition
Students will participate in a 'Belonging Journey Showcase,' where they present their 'Diversity and Belonging Portfolio' through storytelling, sharing their personal growth and learning experiences. The event will include a 'Diversity Dialogue Panel,' allowing students and community partners to engage in discussions about their projects, offering insights into fostering a welcoming environment. Audience interaction will be encouraged, providing a platform for students to articulate their understanding and receive feedback.
