Purpose

The Squishy Science Club immerses students in an engaging exploration of states of matter through hands-on slime experiments, fostering a deeper understanding of scientific principles. It emphasizes the development of essential 21st-century skills, such as collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking, by encouraging students to innovate and problem-solve in a supportive environment. Through digital documentation and a final showcase, students reflect on their learning journey, share their discoveries, and connect with their community, building confidence and a sense of belonging.

Learning goals

Students will explore the properties of matter through hands-on slime-making activities, fostering an understanding of physical and chemical changes. They will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills by experimenting with different slime recipes and troubleshooting outcomes. Through collaborative group work, students will enhance their communication and teamwork abilities, while reflecting on their learning journey in the Reflection Circle. The project will culminate in a Slime Science Carnival, where students will confidently present their findings and demonstrate their understanding of matter interactions.

Standards
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] K-2-ETS1-1 - Ask questions, make observations, and gather information about a situation people want to change to define a simple problem that can be solved through the development of a new or improved object or tool.
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] K-2-ETS1-2 - Develop a simple sketch, drawing, or physical model to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem.
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] LS.1.B - Growth and Development of Organisms
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Throughout the Squishy Science Club, students will create a personalized 'Slime Recipe Book,' documenting their unique slime experiments with detailed descriptions and visual evidence. By the end of the program, they will prepare interactive 'Did You Know' posters, showcasing scientific insights gained during their experiments. The final product will be a 'Slime Science Carnival' booth, where students present their creations and explain the underlying science to peers and families, fostering a deeper understanding of matter and its interactions.

Launch

Kick off the Squishy Science Club with a "Slime Exploration Day" where students rotate through stations featuring different types of slime, including magnetic, glow-in-the-dark, and color-changing varieties. Encourage students to make initial observations and predictions about how each slime might be made and its properties. Conclude with a group discussion to introduce the essential question and set the stage for their own slime-making journey.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Slime Science Carnival,' transforming the classroom into an interactive exploration space. Each student will create a booth featuring their unique slime recipe, complete with demonstrations and explanations of the scientific principles involved. Families and classmates will engage with the exhibits, asking questions and participating in hands-on slime-making activities guided by the students. This event will not only showcase students' understanding of matter and its interactions but also celebrate their creativity and communication skills.
