This project aims to immerse third-grade students in the practical aspects of civic engagement by exploring their rights and responsibilities within their community. Through hands-on experiences, such as organizing a 'Community Day' and participating in a mock city council meeting, students will gain a deeper understanding of local government structures and functions. By fostering collaboration with community partners and encouraging reflective practices, the project will help students develop as engaged citizens who can communicate effectively and work productively with others.

Products
Students will collaboratively create a series of informative posters that highlight the rights and responsibilities of citizens, incorporating insights from community interviews and feedback from peers. They will also produce a reflection journal documenting their weekly learning experiences and personal growth in understanding civic duties. Additionally, students will participate in a mock city council meeting, contributing to a video recording of the session to showcase their role-playing and decision-making skills. These products will be shared during the 'Civic Fair,' where students will present their work to an audience of parents, teachers, and community members.
Launch
Kick off the project with a 'Government in Action' field trip to the local city hall or municipal building. Students will have the opportunity to observe and interact with government officials, gaining firsthand insight into the workings of local government. This immersive experience will set the stage for their exploration of civic duties and responsibilities, sparking curiosity and engagement from the outset.
Exhibition
Students will host a 'Civic Fair' to present their poster campaigns and reflections to parents, teachers, and community members. The fair will feature interactive booths where students showcase their understanding of local government and civic responsibilities. Attendees will engage with students as they explain their projects, discuss their learning experiences, and demonstrate how they applied civic concepts in real-world contexts.
