Purpose

Students will engage in a four-week narrative writing project that connects their personal experiences with community issues, fostering a deeper understanding of their identity and place within their community. Through hands-on workshops, digital storytelling, and reflective portfolios, students will develop their writing skills, critical thinking, and self-directed learning abilities. This project encourages students to explore innovative approaches to storytelling, while building academic vocabulary and comprehension skills, culminating in a compelling narrative that resonates with their peers and community.

Learning goals

Students will develop narrative writing skills by creating compelling stories based on real-life events that resonate with their community. They will enhance their ability to use descriptive language, dialogue, and pacing while integrating multimedia elements in a digital story map. Through reflection, critique, and revision, students will build self-directed learning skills and academic mindsets, fostering a sense of identity and belonging. Additionally, they will engage in critical thinking and problem-solving by exploring innovative approaches to address community issues through their narratives.

Products

Students will create a reflective portfolio that includes their narrative drafts, feedback, and final versions, along with personal reflections on the connection between their stories and community issues. They will also design a digital story map that visually represents their narrative journey using multimedia elements like images, audio, and video. Throughout the project, students will engage in narrative writing workshops, producing compelling personal stories that capture real-life events or experiences. Regular one-on-one conferences will help them refine their narratives, focusing on descriptive language, dialogue, and pacing.

Launch

Begin the project with a community storytelling event where students listen to local storytellers share personal narratives that highlight community issues and personal experiences. Encourage students to engage with the storytellers through questions and discussions, fostering a sense of connection and relevance to their own lives. This immersive experience will serve as inspiration for students to identify themes and ideas for their own narrative projects.

Exhibition

Students will host a community storytelling event where they present their narratives through digital story maps. They will share their reflective portfolios, showcasing their writing journey and personal connections to the stories. The event will include multimedia presentations, allowing students to engage the audience with images, audio, and video elements that enrich their narratives. This exhibition will foster dialogue between students and community members, highlighting the relevance and impact of their stories.
