Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage students in the art of visual storytelling by using close-up shots to create silent narratives that highlight the overlooked details of school life. Through hands-on activities, students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as they explore how everyday objects can convey emotions and messages without words. This project fosters self-directed learning and an academic mindset by encouraging students to reflect on their creative choices and collaborate with peers and community partners, ultimately building a sense of identity and belonging within their school community.

Learning goals

Students will learn to use close-up and detail shots effectively to convey emotions and narratives through non-verbal storytelling. They will develop skills in sequencing, transitions, and editing, enhancing their ability to create coherent and engaging silent stories. Through peer feedback and self-reflection, students will build self-directed learning skills and critical thinking, while exploring their sense of identity and belonging within the school community.
Standards
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.2.5 - Create audio recordings of stories or poems; add drawings or other visual displays to stories or recounts of experiences when appropriate to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] MU:Cr3.2.K.a - With guidance, demonstrate a final version of personal musical ideas to peers.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] DA:Pr6.1.2.b - Use limited production elements (for example, hand props, simple scenery, or media projections).
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will create a series of 15-30 second silent videos using close-up shots to tell stories about everyday school objects and routines. Throughout the project, they will develop storyboards and behind-the-scenes documentation to accompany their videos. The final product will be a collaborative video compilation that captures the essence of their school community, showcasing the unique stories and emotions of school life. This compilation will be presented at a screening event, where students will engage in discussions about their creative choices and storytelling techniques.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Close-Up Adventure' scavenger hunt, where students explore the school to capture intriguing close-up shots of everyday objects. Encourage them to view familiar surroundings through a new lens and share their findings with classmates, sparking curiosity and creativity. Follow this with a 'Silent Film Festival' featuring short films that creatively use close-up shots, leading to a discussion on the emotions and narratives these films convey without words.

Exhibition

Host a "Close-Up Stories Showcase" where students present their silent video projects to peers, teachers, and community members, including the professional videographer. Set up interactive stations where students can display their storyboards and behind-the-scenes photos, explaining their creative processes and choices. Facilitate a Q&A session for students to discuss the emotions and messages conveyed in their videos, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of their work. Conclude the event with a celebratory screening, inviting feedback and reflections from the audience to highlight the impact of their storytelling.
