Purpose

Students will collaboratively design and implement a physical activity game that emphasizes safety, respect, and inclusion. Through this hands-on project, they will engage in teamwork and critical thinking to create a game that incorporates fundamental dance skills and safe body-use practices. This experience will foster personal and social responsibility, enhance physical literacy, and develop competencies in collaboration, critical thinking, and self-directed learning.

Learning goals

Students will collaboratively design a physical activity game, incorporating safety, respect, and inclusion principles, and present their game to peers. They will demonstrate fundamental dance skills and safe body-use practices while explaining the connection between these practices and healthful living. Through this project, students will develop teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, fostering positive relationships and personal growth.
Standards
  • [National Core Arts Standards] DA:Pr5.1.5.b - Demonstrate safe body-use practices during technical exercises and movement combinations. Discuss how these practices, along with healthful eating habits, promote strength, flexibility, endurance and injury prevention.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] DA:Pr5.1.4.a - Demonstrate fundamental dance skills (for example, alignment, coordination, balance, core support, kinesthetic awareness) and movement qualities when replicating and recalling patterns and sequences of locomotor and non-locomotor movements.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] DA:Pr5.1.4.b - Execute techniques that extend movement range, build strength, and develop endurance. Explain the relationship between execution of technique, safe body-use, and healthful nutrition.
Competencies
  • Productive Collaborator - Engages with others to achieve a common goal through building positive relationships, actively listening, showing empathy, and making individual contributions to a larger group.
  • Critical Thinker - Thinks deeply and makes informed decisions to create solutions or new understanding supported by relevant and reliable evidence.
  • Empowered Learner - Demonstrates mastery and application of academic competencies. Develops the skills and dispositions to persist through difficulties and plan for a future of self-improvement.

Products

Students will collaboratively design and create a unique physical activity game, complete with a rulebook that emphasizes safety, respect, and inclusion. They will produce a visual presentation or poster detailing the game's rules, objectives, and the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship. The final product will include a live demonstration and play session of the game with their peers, showcasing their understanding of movement skills and safe body-use practices.

Launch

To kick off the learning experience, students will participate in a "Game Creation Workshop" where they brainstorm and explore different physical activities and games they enjoy. They will work in small groups to identify key elements such as safety, respect, and inclusion, and discuss how these can be integrated into their own game designs. Each group will create a simple prototype of their game and present it to the class, receiving feedback and suggestions for improvement. This collaborative session will set the stage for the project, encouraging creativity, teamwork, and critical thinking from the outset.

Exhibition

Students will host a "Game Day Showcase" where they present their designed physical activity games to classmates, teachers, and family members. Each group will demonstrate their game, explaining the rules and the importance of safety, respect, and inclusion. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in the games, providing feedback and celebrating the students' creativity and collaboration. This event will also include a reflection session where students discuss the skills they developed and the challenges they overcame during the project.
