Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to immerse students in the Spanish language and culture through the creation and operation of a student-run restaurant. By engaging in real-world roles such as chefs, servers, and hosts, students will develop language proficiency, cultural understanding, and practical skills in hospitality. This project fosters self-directed learning, critical thinking, and a sense of community, as students collaborate with local experts and reflect on their personal growth and identity. Through hands-on activities and authentic interactions, students will enhance their academic mindset and problem-solving abilities, preparing them for diverse real-world scenarios.

Learning goals

Students will develop proficiency in Spanish language skills through practical application in a restaurant setting, focusing on effective communication with customers and peers. They will gain a deeper understanding of Spanish cuisine and cultural practices by collaborating with community partners and engaging in hands-on cooking experiences. Through self-directed learning and peer feedback, students will refine their roles and responsibilities within the restaurant, enhancing their problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities. The project aims to foster a sense of identity and belonging, encouraging students to reflect on their growth and cultural insights throughout the process.

Products

Students will create a video documentary capturing their entire restaurant project, highlighting their learning journey, challenges, and reflections in Spanish. They will also develop a Spanish language guidebook for restaurant patrons, featuring common phrases and vocabulary used in dining scenarios. During the exhibition, students will conduct a live cooking demonstration, preparing a signature Spanish dish and engaging guests with interactive questions and cultural insights. These products will showcase their language skills, cultural understanding, and culinary expertise.

Launch

Begin the project with a dynamic 'Restaurant Role Play Day' where students simulate a real dining experience. Set up a mock restaurant environment in the classroom, complete with tables, menus, and kitchen stations. Students will take turns practicing roles such as host, server, and chef, using Spanish to interact with mock customers and take orders from a set menu of traditional Spanish dishes. This immersive launch activity will introduce students to the project's essential questions and set the stage for their learning journey.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Taste of Spain Night,' inviting family and friends to experience their Spanish-themed restaurant. They will serve as chefs and waitstaff, speaking Spanish while offering a menu of dishes they have learned to prepare. The event will include a live cooking demonstration, where students prepare a signature Spanish dish and engage guests with interactive questions and cultural insights. Additionally, students will provide a Spanish language guidebook to enhance guests' communication during the dining experience.
