Purpose

The purpose of this project is to help first-grade students explore and express their unique identities through the creation of a 'Me Box.' By engaging in this hands-on, creative process, students will develop self-awareness and a sense of belonging as they share their personal stories and artifacts with peers and family. This project fosters collaboration, critical thinking, and communication skills, encouraging students to reflect on their experiences and appreciate the diverse identities within their community.

Learning goals

Students will develop a deeper understanding of their own identities by curating a 'Me Box' filled with personal items that reflect their unique stories and experiences. They will enhance their communication and digital literacy skills through video presentations and 'Show and Tell' sessions, while fostering a sense of belonging and self-efficacy. Through collaboration with peers and family engagement, students will engage in critical reflection and action, strengthening their ability to think critically and solve problems related to identity and community.
Standards
  • [National Core Arts Standards] VA:Cn10.1.1a - Identify times, places and reasons by which students make art outside of school.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] TH:Cr1.1.b - Collaborate with peers to conceptualize costumes and props in a guided drama experience (e.g., process drama, story drama, creative drama).
  • [National Core Arts Standards] VA:Cr1.1.1a - Engage collaboratively in exploration and imaginative play with materials.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will create a personalized 'Me Box' filled with items representing their identity, which they will present during a 'Show and Tell' session. They will also produce a video presentation explaining the significance of each item in their 'Me Box.' These products will be showcased at the 'Family Identity Night,' where students will display their 'Me Boxes' in a gallery-style setup for families to explore.

Launch

Begin the project with a 'Memory Lane Walk,' where students bring in a cherished photo or object from home. Each student will share the story behind their item with the class, fostering an environment of curiosity and respect. This activity sets the stage for students to start thinking about their unique identities and the meaningful elements they will include in their 'Me Box.'

Exhibition

Organize a 'Family Identity Night' where students showcase their 'Me Boxes' in a gallery-style exhibition. Invite families to explore the displays, engage in conversations about each student's unique identity, and participate in interactive activities that promote understanding and appreciation of diversity. This event will provide a platform for students to proudly share their personal stories and foster a sense of community and belonging.
