Purpose

Embark on a journey to understand the engineering design process by creating a 3D model that reflects real-world problem-solving. Dive into the world of digital modeling using Tinkercad, where you will transform your ideas into virtual structures. Through this project, you will not only learn technical skills but also develop critical thinking by designing a community space that addresses local needs.

Learning goals

Develop a foundational understanding of the engineering design process by engaging in hands-on 3D modeling activities. Gain proficiency in using Tinkercad to create and manipulate digital models, applying geometric concepts and spatial reasoning. Enhance problem-solving skills through iterative design, reflection, and adaptation to overcome challenges. Communicate design choices effectively by preparing a presentation that articulates how the model meets community needs.

Products

Design and develop a digital 3D model of a community space, such as a park or library, using Tinkercad. Document your process in a digital portfolio, capturing each stage with screenshots and reflections on the challenges and solutions encountered. Prepare a presentation that explains your design choices and demonstrates how your model addresses community needs.

Launch

Kick off your project by visiting a local community space, like a park or library, to observe its design and functionality. Take notes and sketch ideas about what you find interesting or what could be improved. Back in the classroom, share your observations and discuss how these spaces serve the community, setting the stage for your own 3D modeling project.

Exhibition

Organize a showcase event where you present your digital 3D model of a community space to peers, teachers, and community members. Prepare a presentation that highlights your design choices, explaining how they meet community needs and incorporate elements of the engineering design process. Facilitate a gallery walk where attendees can view your portfolio, including screenshots and reflections, and provide feedback on your work.
