Purpose

This project empowers students to actively engage with their community by identifying and addressing the needs of local charities. Through the creation of persuasive multimedia content, students develop essential communication, critical thinking, and empathy skills. By collaborating with community partners, students gain real-world experience in advocacy and public policy, ultimately inspiring meaningful community involvement and support for local causes.

Learning goals

Students will develop skills in persuasive communication by crafting compelling narratives and utilizing video editing techniques to create impactful public service announcements. They will enhance their ability to synthesize and evaluate information through research and interviews with local charities. The project will foster empathy and community advocacy by encouraging students to understand and represent diverse viewpoints and needs. Through strategic planning and creative problem-solving, students will produce original works that effectively engage and mobilize community support. Additionally, students will practice receiving and incorporating feedback to refine their projects, culminating in a reflective speech on their learning journey.

Products

Students will create a persuasive video that serves as a Public Service Announcement for a local charity, effectively communicating its mission and needs. Throughout the project, students will develop storyboards, scripts, and video edits, refining their work through peer feedback and critique sessions. The final videos will be showcased to the charities and the student body, with an opportunity for the community to engage by voting for the most compelling presentation.

Launch

Kick off the project with a community needs scavenger hunt where students explore their local area, either virtually or in-person, to identify pressing issues and potential charities addressing them. Follow this with a class discussion where students share their findings and reflect on the importance of community support. This activity will set the stage for selecting a charity and understanding the real-world impact of their project.

Exhibition

Students will present their finished videos to the partnered charities during a special exhibition event, fostering direct engagement and feedback from the community organizations. The broader student body will be invited to view the videos in a school-wide showcase, where they can vote for the most compelling public service announcement. This exhibition not only highlights students' creative efforts but also serves as a platform for the charities to gain visibility and potentially attract new supporters.
