Purpose

This project aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to make informed and healthier food choices by engaging them in real-world learning experiences. Through hands-on activities, collaboration with nutrition experts, and creative projects, students will explore the impact of nutrition on health and well-being. The project fosters critical thinking, self-directed learning, and community engagement, empowering students to design balanced meal plans and understand their role in promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Learning goals

Students will develop skills in designing balanced meal plans that meet nutritional needs, enhancing their understanding of health and well-being. They will learn to critically evaluate food choices and their impact, using self-directed learning and peer feedback. Through collaboration with community partners, students will gain practical knowledge in reading nutrition labels and understanding portion sizes. By engaging in creative exhibitions and cooking demonstrations, students will refine their ability to articulate the nutritional benefits of meals, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Products

Students will create a 'Nutrition Comic Book', illustrating a story about a character learning to make healthier food choices, with integrated nutritional facts and meal plans. Additionally, they will participate in a 'Healthy Recipe Swap' event, where they bring a homemade dish from their meal plan, share the recipe, and explain the nutritional benefits of the ingredients. These products will be showcased in a 'Balanced Meal Gallery', featuring artistic representations of their meal plans, including drawings, collages, or digital art, with explanations of the nutritional benefits.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience with a 'Culinary Arts Day' where students rotate through cooking stations, preparing simple, healthy snacks and meals. Each station, guided by a local nutritionist, highlights the nutritional benefits of the ingredients used. This interactive and hands-on launch will spark curiosity and excitement about nutrition, setting the stage for the project.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Balanced Meal Gallery' where they display their meal plans through artistic representations such as drawings, collages, or digital art. Each student will provide explanations of the nutritional benefits of their meals, showcasing their understanding of balanced nutrition. The exhibition will be open to classmates, teachers, and parents, creating an engaging environment for students to share their learning and receive feedback from the community.
