Purpose

This project aims to foster a sense of identity and belonging among first-grade students by exploring the connections between their classroom and the larger community. Through hands-on activities like scavenger hunts, art creation, and data collection, students will actively engage in understanding their environment and the people within it. By reflecting on their observations and participating in community-focused activities, students will develop critical thinking skills and a deeper appreciation for their role in improving their community.

Learning goals

Students will explore the concept of community by engaging in activities that connect their classroom to the larger community, such as creating art projects that depict family and community members. They will collect and analyze data about their classmates to understand diversity and similarities within their classroom. Through scavenger hunts and discussions, students will reflect on the importance of recycling and community improvement efforts. They will document their observations and learning through pictures and drawings, fostering self-directed learning and critical thinking. Throughout the project, students will build a sense of identity and belonging, enhancing their academic mindset and problem-solving skills.
Standards
  • [National Core Arts Standards] VA:Cn10.1.1a - Identify times, places and reasons by which students make art outside of school.
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] K-2.AF.4.2 - Use and share pictures, drawings, and/or writings of observations.
  • [National Council for the Social Studies] D2.Civ.14.K-2 - Describe how people have tried to improve their communities over time.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will collaboratively create a community mural that integrates family photos, drawings of community members, and data collected from classroom scavenger hunts. Each student will contribute a personal art piece that reflects their understanding of recycling and community improvement, using observations shared through pictures and writings. The mural will serve as a visual representation of the classroom's connection to the larger community, showcasing the diverse identities and roles within it.

Launch

Begin the project with a classroom scavenger hunt where students search for and photograph items that represent different aspects of their community, such as family photos, recycling bins, and classroom helpers. Encourage students to share their findings and discuss how these items connect to the larger community outside of school. This activity will initiate a dialogue about community roles and responsibilities, setting the stage for deeper exploration and reflection.

Exhibition

At the end of the project, students will host a "Community Showcase" where they display their family pictures and artwork depicting community members and recycling efforts. They will present their scavenger hunt findings and data collection results through interactive displays and storytelling. The event will include a gallery walk for parents and community members to engage with the students' projects, fostering a sense of pride and belonging.
