Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to immerse students in the world of journalism, enabling them to explore and understand the criteria that make stories newsworthy. Through hands-on activities, students will investigate local issues, evaluate the reliability of news sources, and apply ethical journalism principles. By creating multimedia news segments, students will develop critical thinking and communication skills while fostering a deeper connection with their community.

Learning goals

Students will develop media literacy skills by analyzing and evaluating various news sources to determine their reliability and newsworthiness. They will apply ethical journalism principles to investigate and report on local issues, creating multimedia news segments that reflect diverse community perspectives. Through hands-on experience, students will enhance their storytelling abilities, using video, audio, and text to produce engaging and informative news content. Additionally, students will collaborate and provide constructive feedback to peers, refining their understanding of effective communication and critical thinking in journalism.

Products

Students will produce a series of 45-90 second news shorts that investigate and report on local stories, which will be shared on YouTube as part of a 'Weekly News Roundup' playlist. Each student will also compile a digital portfolio that includes their news segment, reflections on newsworthiness criteria, and evaluations of their sources' reliability. Additionally, students will create a guide to help others evaluate news sources, incorporating multimedia elements to enhance understanding.

Launch

Begin with an immersive 'Community Story Hunt' where students explore their local area, equipped with cameras and notebooks, to capture stories and conduct interviews with residents about pressing local issues. Follow this with a dynamic 'Media Literacy Workshop' featuring interactive stations that allow students to dissect various news sources, identify fake news, and discuss the elements that make a story newsworthy. These activities will set the stage for students to critically engage with the concept of news and prepare them to create their own impactful stories.

Exhibition

Students will showcase their learning through the production of daily news YouTube shorts, which will be shared with the school community. These shorts will be part of a 'Virtual News Fair,' where they will be streamed live, allowing viewers to engage in an interactive online chat. This digital exhibition will provide a platform for students to present their multimedia news segments, receive feedback, and discuss their reporting process with a broader audience.
