Purpose

Engage in an immersive car detailing project to explore the science and techniques behind cleaning processes, while enhancing teamwork, decision-making, and self-confidence. Collaborate with peers to research and experiment with cleaning products, documenting your findings and reflections in a digital portfolio. Develop critical thinking skills by analyzing the effectiveness of different cleaning strategies and sharing insights through a video presentation. Strengthen your academic mindset by establishing a sense of identity and belonging within the project, fostering a deeper understanding of real-world applications.

Learning goals

Explore the chemistry behind car detailing by researching how different cleaning products interact with dirt and surfaces, and conduct simple experiments to observe these reactions. Develop teamwork and decision-making skills by collaborating with peers to create a digital portfolio and video presentation that documents the detailing process and scientific insights. Enhance self-directed learning and academic mindset by using feedback and self-reflection to monitor progress and articulate personal performance goals. Engage in critical thinking and problem-solving by considering innovative approaches to improve efficiency in car detailing.
Standards
  • [National Core Arts Standards] DA:Pr5.1.8.c - Collaborate with peers to discover strategies for achieving performance accuracy, clarity, and expressiveness. Articulate personal performance goals and practice to reach goals. Document personal improvement over time (for example, journaling, portfolio, or timeline).
  • [National Core Arts Standards] DA:Pr5.1.I.c - Collaborate with peers to establish and implement a rehearsal plan to meet performance goals. Use a variety of strategies to analyze and evaluate performances of self and others (for example, use video recordings of practice to analyze the difference between the way movements look and how they feel to match performance with visual affect). Articulate performance goals and justify reasons for selecting particular practice strategies.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] DA:Pr6.1.III.a - Demonstrate leadership qualities (for example commitment, dependability, responsibility, and cooperation) when preparing for performances. Model performance etiquette and performance practices during class, rehearsal and performance. Enhance performance using a broad repertoire of strategies for dynamic projection. Develop a professional portfolio (resume, head shot, etc.) that documents the rehearsal and performance process with fluency in professional dance terminology and production terminology.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Throughout this project, create a digital portfolio that showcases video clips of the car detailing process, reflections on teamwork and decision-making, and scientific explanations of the cleaning products used. Conduct simple experiments to observe chemical reactions, documenting your findings in the portfolio. Conclude with a video presentation explaining the car detailing process, highlighting techniques, the science behind each step, and the role of teamwork and decision-making. Share your digital portfolio with the class to demonstrate your learning journey and the skills developed.

Launch

Kick off the project by organizing a hands-on car detailing demonstration where you can observe and participate in cleaning a vehicle using various products. Discuss the initial observations about the effectiveness of different cleaning techniques and products. Collaborate with peers to brainstorm questions about the science behind these methods and the importance of teamwork in achieving a polished result.

Exhibition

Host a "Car Detailing Showcase" where you present your digital portfolios to classmates, teachers, and family members. Set up stations with video presentations and live demonstrations of the car detailing process, highlighting the science and teamwork involved. Encourage visitors to ask questions and provide feedback on your techniques and decision-making strategies. Use this opportunity to reflect on your learning journey and celebrate your achievements with the community.
