1-pager
Purpose
Students will explore the elements of art to express emotions and ideas, fostering self-directed learning through reflection and feedback. They will engage in hands-on projects that encourage critical thinking and problem-solving, using art to address questions relevant to their communities. This experience aims to build academic mindset by helping students establish a sense of place and identity, enhancing their self-efficacy and belonging. Through creative expression, students will refine their understanding of how art communicates intentional effects and purpose.
Learning goals
Students will explore the elements of art—line, shape, color, texture, form, space, and value—through hands-on projects that express their emotions and ideas. They will analyze how different media and techniques affect mood and communication, refining their artworks to enhance clarity and purpose. Throughout the project, students will engage in self-directed learning by reflecting on their artwork and incorporating feedback from peers and teachers. They will develop an academic mindset by connecting their artistic expressions to their sense of identity and belonging. Additionally, students will practice critical thinking and problem-solving by experimenting with innovative approaches to convey complex questions relevant to their communities.
Standards
- [National Core Arts Standards] VA:Re8.1.3a - Interpret art by analyzing use of media to create subject matter, characteristics of form, and mood.
- [National Core Arts Standards] MA:Cr3.1.3.b - Practice and analyze how the emphasis of elements alters effect and purpose in refining and completing media artworks.
- [National Core Arts Standards] MA:Cr3.1.5.b - Determine how elements and components can be altered for clear communication and intentional effects, and refine media artworks to improve clarity and purpose.
Competencies
- Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
- Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
- Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
Products
Students will collaboratively create a multimedia art exhibition that showcases their exploration of the elements of art. Each student will contribute a piece that interprets a personal emotion or idea using various media, such as painting, sculpture, or digital art. Throughout the project, students will document their creative process and reflections in a digital portfolio, which they will present alongside their artwork. This exhibition will serve as a platform for students to engage with their peers and community, fostering dialogue and deeper understanding of artistic expression.
Launch
Begin the project by inviting students to visit a local art gallery or museum, either virtually or in person, to observe and discuss various artworks. Encourage them to focus on how different elements of art such as color, line, and shape are used to convey emotions and ideas. Following the visit, facilitate a group discussion where students share their observations and initial thoughts on how they might use these elements in their own art projects. This experience will spark curiosity and set the stage for their exploration and creation over the next four weeks.
Exhibition
Students will curate a school-wide art exhibition showcasing their projects, where they will present and explain their artwork to peers, teachers, and family members. Each student will display a piece that highlights their understanding of the elements of art and how these elements were used to convey emotions and ideas. The exhibition will include interactive stations where visitors can engage with the creative process, such as trying out different media or exploring how altering elements can change a piece's mood or message. This event will foster a sense of community and belonging, allowing students to reflect on their artistic journey and receive feedback from a diverse audience.
