Purpose

This project aims to help students explore and understand their emotions through creative drama and art, fostering emotional awareness and self-regulation. By engaging in guided drama experiences and creating personal art pieces, students will connect their emotional experiences to characters and narratives, enhancing their empathy and self-reflection skills. The project encourages students to develop strategies for healthy emotional responses, while building a supportive community through shared reflections and artistic expression.

Learning goals

Students will explore and express their emotions through guided drama experiences, using movement and gestures to communicate feelings. They will develop self-awareness by maintaining an emotion journal, reflecting on personal experiences, and sharing insights with peers. Through the creation of artwork and participation in a 'Gallery of Emotions,' students will articulate their emotional journeys, fostering a sense of identity and belonging. By engaging in critical reflection and collaborative activities, students will enhance their emotional regulation skills and build a supportive learning community.
Standards
  • [National Core Arts Standards] TH:Cn10.1.a - Identify character emotions in a guided drama experience (e.g., process drama, story drama, creative drama) and relate it to personal experience.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] TH:Pr6.1.a - With prompting and support, use movement and gestures to communicate emotions in a guided drama experience (e.g., process drama, story drama, creative drama).
  • [National Core Arts Standards] TH:Re7.K.a - With prompting and support, express an emotional response to characters in dramatic play or a guided drama experience (e.g., process drama, story drama, creative drama).
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Throughout the week, students will create a personal emotion journal, documenting their daily feelings, triggers, and coping strategies. They will also produce artwork for the 'Gallery of Emotions' exhibition, which includes visual pieces like paintings, drawings, or sculptures, accompanied by written reflections or poetry. These products will allow students to explore and express their emotional journeys, while the 'Circle of Trust' activity will result in shared experiences that deepen community bonds.

Launch

Kick off the project with an interactive drama workshop where students role-play different scenarios that evoke a range of emotions. Encourage them to explore and express these emotions through movement and gestures, creating a safe space for experimentation. This activity will set the stage for the week by helping students connect with their emotions and understand the importance of emotional regulation.

Exhibition

Students will curate a 'Gallery of Emotions' art exhibition, showcasing their creative interpretations of personal emotional journeys through various art forms such as paintings, drawings, or sculptures. Each piece will be accompanied by a written reflection or poem that narrates the student's emotional experience and growth throughout the project. The exhibition will be open to peers, teachers, and family members, fostering a community dialogue around emotional awareness and expression.
