Purpose

This project aims to deepen students' understanding of their own learning preferences through the lens of Gardner's Multiple Intelligences while integrating mathematical concepts like fractions, decimals, percentages, and angles. By creating a personalized visual art piece, students explore and express their unique intelligences, fostering self-awareness and critical thinking. The hands-on approach encourages students to engage with math in a tangible way, promoting a sense of identity and belonging as they connect their learning styles to visual representations.

Learning goals

Students will explore mathematical concepts such as fractions, decimals, percentages, and angles through hands-on activities, culminating in the creation of a visual representation of multiple intelligences. They will engage in self-directed learning by utilizing feedback and reflection to refine their projects. Through critical thinking and problem-solving, students will investigate diverse learning styles and express their own preferences creatively. The project fosters an academic mindset by encouraging students to reflect on their identity and sense of belonging within the learning community.
Standards
  • [Common Core] CCSS.Math.Content.K.G.B.5 - Model shapes in the world by building shapes from components (e.g., sticks and clay balls) and drawing shapes.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.Math.Content.K.G.B.4 - Analyze and compare two- and three-dimensional shapes, in different sizes and orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, parts (e.g., number of sides and vertices/"corners") and other attributes (e.g., having sides of equal length).
  • [Common Core] CCSS.Math.Content.K.G.A.3 - Identify shapes as two-dimensional (lying in a plane, "flat") or three-dimensional ("solid").
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will create personalized cardboard eye pieces, each representing their unique learning style based on Gardner's Multiple Intelligences. Throughout the project, students will engage in hands-on activities to explore fractions, decimals, percentages, and angles, culminating in the design of their eye piece. The final products will be displayed in a school-wide exhibition, showcasing the diverse ways students learn and express their understanding through visual art and design.

Launch

Begin the project with a dynamic activity where students sort a bag of M&Ms by color, using math to calculate fractions, decimals, and percentages. Guide them in converting these into angles and placing them within a circle, introducing the concept of dividing a circle into sections. This interactive experience not only reinforces mathematical concepts but also lays the groundwork for creatively representing the diverse ways people learn.

Exhibition

Students will showcase their completed cardboard eye pieces in a school-wide exhibition, transforming a common area into a vibrant gallery. Each eye piece will be accompanied by a brief student-written description explaining their personal learning style and the mathematical concepts used in their design. Invite students, teachers, and families to participate in a 'Gallery Walk,' where attendees can view the diverse representations of learning intelligences and engage in conversations with the creators. This exhibition not only celebrates the students' artistic and mathematical achievements but also fosters a deeper understanding of the varied ways individuals learn.
