Purpose

This project immerses students in an engaging exploration of the interdependent relationships between plants and animals, fostering a deeper understanding of ecological systems. Through hands-on activities, collaborative investigations, and creative modeling, students actively discover how plants rely on water, light, and animals for growth and reproduction. By engaging with community partners and participating in reflective and communicative practices, students develop essential skills in collaboration and effective communication, preparing them to think critically and creatively about real-world environmental challenges.

Learning goals

Students will investigate the essential needs of plants, specifically focusing on the roles of water, light, and animal interactions in plant growth and reproduction. They will collaboratively design and test models that mimic seed dispersal and pollination, enhancing their understanding of ecological relationships. Through active participation in discussions, reflections, and community partner interactions, students will develop effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively. The project aims to deepen students' scientific inquiry skills and foster a connection between classroom learning and real-world ecological processes.
Standards
  • [Colorado] LS2.2.1 - Plants depend on water and light to grow and on animals for pollination or to move their seeds around.
  • [Colorado] LS2.2.1 - Plants depend on water and light to grow and on animals for pollination or to move their seeds around.
  • [Colorado] 2.1.1 - Engage in dialogue and learn new information through active listening.
Competencies
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Students will collaboratively create a vibrant mural illustrating the life cycle of plants and their interactions with animals, complete with detailed labels and descriptions. Additionally, they will produce a short educational video or animation narrating the journey of a seed from dispersal to growth, highlighting the roles of various animals in the process. These products will be showcased during the 'Nature's Symphony' event, where students will also perform a skit or song to further demonstrate their understanding of plant and animal interactions.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Nature Exploration Walk' on school grounds, where students use magnifying glasses and notebooks to document local plant and animal interactions. Follow this with a group discussion to share observations and connect them to the essential question of how plants and animals work together in nature. This hands-on exploration sets the stage for the project by sparking curiosity and encouraging students to observe and think critically about the natural world around them.

Exhibition

Host a 'Nature's Symphony' event where students perform a short skit or song about plant and animal interactions, incorporating their models and reflections to demonstrate their understanding. Create a 'Green Thumb Gallery' where students display their models and investigations in a dedicated space, inviting parents, community partners, and other classes to explore and learn about plant and animal interactions. Organize a 'Plant and Animal Interaction Fair' where students present their models and findings from their investigations to peers, teachers, and community partners, explaining the scientific principles behind their projects.
