The Challenge

Urban heat islands significantly increase temperatures in densely populated areas, exacerbating energy consumption, air pollution, and health risks. The challenge lies in identifying and implementing effective solutions, such as cool roofs and pavements, to mitigate these impacts and improve urban living conditions. How can we design and implement a community awareness campaign that educates our neighborhood about the benefits of using cool roofs and pavements to combat urban heat in NYC?

Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

The Learning Journey

Phase Learning Outcome
Discover
I can identify the challenge of urban heat islands and its root causes by participating in an engaging launch activity that sparks curiosity and conviction about the problem.
Examine
I can research the causes and effects of urban heat islands by analyzing data from the NYC Department of Environmental Protection and conducting surveys on local roof and pavement materials.
Engineer
I can develop a prototype of a cool roof or pavement using everyday materials that effectively reduces surface temperatures in my neighborhood.
Do
I can test the effectiveness of my cool roof solution by collecting real-world data on temperature reduction and analyzing its impact before sharing results.
Share
I can share my built solution and learning journey through a multimedia presentation at a community event, reflecting on my personal growth and the project's impact.
