Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage 6th-grade students in a hands-on exploration of human anatomy, focusing on muscles, bones, and organs. Through interactive activities, partnerships with community experts, and collaborative projects, students will deepen their understanding of how anatomical structures function and support movement. This project aims to foster critical thinking, collaboration, and personal connections to health and body awareness, culminating in a dynamic showcase of their newfound knowledge.

Learning goals

Students will explore the fundamental concepts of anatomy, focusing on the location and function of muscles, bones, and organs. They will engage in hands-on activities and experiments to understand muscle movement and the skeletal system's role in supporting daily activities. By collaborating with peers and community partners, students will develop critical thinking and collaborative skills, while creating an interactive anatomy mural to demonstrate their knowledge.
Standards
  • [National Core Arts Standards] DA:Pr5.1.6.b - Apply basic anatomical knowledge, proprioceptive feedback, spatial awareness, and nutrition to promote safe and healthful strategies when warming up and dancing.
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] MS-LS4-2 - Apply scientific ideas to construct an explanation for the anatomical similarities and differences among modern organisms and between modern and fossil organisms to infer evolutionary relationships.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] DA:Pr5.1.5.b - Demonstrate safe body-use practices during technical exercises and movement combinations. Discuss how these practices, along with healthful eating habits, promote strength, flexibility, endurance and injury prevention.
Competencies
  • Productive Collaborator - Engages with others to achieve a common goal through building positive relationships, actively listening, showing empathy, and making individual contributions to a larger group.
  • Critical Thinker - Thinks deeply and makes informed decisions to create solutions or new understanding supported by relevant and reliable evidence.
  • Empowered Learner - Demonstrates mastery and application of academic competencies. Develops the skills and dispositions to persist through difficulties and plan for a future of self-improvement.

Products

Students will collaboratively create a life-sized interactive anatomy mural, where they can attach and detach labeled cutouts of muscles and bones. This

Launch

Kick off the learning experience with a 'Body in Motion' day, where students participate in a series of engaging physical activities such as yoga, dance, and sports. Each session will be followed by a brief discussion highlighting the muscles and bones involved in the movements they just performed. This dynamic launch will set the stage for exploring anatomy by connecting physical experiences with scientific inquiry, fostering curiosity and excitement about the human body.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Body Carnival' where they create interactive stations that demonstrate different muscle and bone functions. Each station will feature activities such as muscle strength tests and bone puzzles, allowing visitors to engage with the students' learning. Classmates, teachers, and parents will be invited to participate, providing a platform for students to showcase their understanding of anatomy through hands-on experiences.
