Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to provide students with the opportunity to practice and refine their social, emotional, and adaptive skills in real-world public settings. By engaging in a field trip to a restaurant and movie theater, students will learn to navigate social interactions, demonstrate appropriate manners, and adapt to different environments. This hands-on experience allows students to reflect on their behavior, receive feedback, and collaboratively create a "How To" guide that encapsulates their learning, fostering a sense of self-awareness and community belonging.

Learning goals

Students will develop effective communication and social interaction skills in public settings, enhancing their ability to create positive experiences with others. They will practice and demonstrate mutual respect and appropriate behavior in a restaurant and movie theater environment. Through self-reflection and peer feedback, students will gain insights into their social and emotional growth, contributing to a collaborative "How To" guide that showcases their learning and understanding.

Products

Students will collaboratively create a "How To" presentation, demonstrating appropriate behavior in restaurants and movie theaters. This presentation will be shared with special education teachers and central office staff, showcasing their learning and insights. Additionally, students will compile a "How To" book, featuring advice and reflections from their field trip experiences, to serve as a resource for future outings.

Launch

To kick off the learning experience, initiate a role-play activity where students simulate dining at a restaurant and attending a movie theater. Assign roles such as diners, waitstaff, and moviegoers, encouraging students to practice manners and social interactions. Use this activity to spark discussions about expectations and behaviors in public spaces, setting the stage for the upcoming field trip.

Exhibition

Students will host an interactive exhibition at the school where they present their "How To" book and presentation to special education teachers and central office staff. During the exhibition, students will demonstrate key social skills learned, such as greeting guests and engaging in polite conversation. Attendees will be invited to participate in role-play scenarios facilitated by the students, simulating restaurant and movie theater environments to showcase practical applications of their learning.
