Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage students in understanding the dynamic processes of tectonic plates and their significant impact on the Earth's surface, including natural disasters like earthquakes. Through hands-on activities, interactive simulations, and collaborative projects, students will develop critical thinking skills and deepen their knowledge of geological phenomena. This project aims to foster a sense of curiosity and scientific inquiry, encouraging students to analyze real-world data and evidence to form a comprehensive understanding of plate tectonics.

Learning goals

Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of tectonic plates and their role in shaping the Earth's surface and causing natural disasters like earthquakes. They will engage in collaborative activities to build models, participate in simulations, and present their findings, fostering critical thinking and communication skills. Through hands-on experiences, students will analyze geological evidence and interpret data to explain plate movements and their effects, demonstrating mastery of scientific concepts and processes.
Standards
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] HS-ESS1-5 - Evaluate evidence of the past and current movements of continental and oceanic crust and the theory of plate tectonics to explain the ages of crustal rocks.
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] HS-ESS1-5 - Evaluate evidence of the past and current movements of continental and oceanic crust and the theory of plate tectonics to explain the ages of crustal rocks.
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] MS-ESS2-3 - Analyze and interpret data on the distribution of fossils and rocks, continental shapes, and seafloor structures to provide evidence of the past plate motions.
Competencies
  • Productive Collaborator - Engages with others to achieve a common goal through building positive relationships, actively listening, showing empathy, and making individual contributions to a larger group.
  • Critical Thinker - Thinks deeply and makes informed decisions to create solutions or new understanding supported by relevant and reliable evidence.
  • Empowered Learner - Demonstrates mastery and application of academic competencies. Develops the skills and dispositions to persist through difficulties and plan for a future of self-improvement.

Products

Students will create a detailed diorama illustrating a cross-section of the Earth, highlighting tectonic plates, fault lines, and their interactions. Throughout the project, students will design posters and models to visually explain plate movements and their impact on natural disasters. By the end of the project, they will also develop a presentation showcasing their understanding of tectonic plate dynamics, supported by simulations and models created during the 'Platequake Challenge' and 'Tectonic Plate Fair'.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience with the 'Platequake Challenge,' where students form small groups to construct models of tectonic plates using clay and cardboard. They will simulate plate movements to observe how these movements can lead to earthquakes. This hands-on activity encourages collaboration and sets the stage for deeper exploration into the dynamics of tectonic plates and their impact on the Earth's surface.

Exhibition

Students will present their dioramas and posters in a 'Tectonic Plate Showcase' event, where they explain the science behind plate tectonics and its impact on the Earth's surface. Each student will have the opportunity to discuss their models and simulations, demonstrating their understanding to peers, teachers, and family members. This exhibition will encourage students to articulate their learning journey, highlight their creative solutions, and engage in meaningful dialogue about geological phenomena.
