Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to immerse students in the exploration of their own bodies, fostering a deep understanding of anatomy and physiology through hands-on activities and real-world applications. By engaging with community partners and utilizing technology, students will actively investigate bodily functions, promoting critical thinking and collaboration. This project encourages students to connect their personal experiences with scientific knowledge, cultivating a positive body image and awareness of healthy relationships, while developing skills for lifelong learning and self-improvement.

Learning goals

Students will explore and understand the basic anatomy and physiology of the human body, focusing on key processes that sustain life. They will engage in hands-on activities and experiments to observe and analyze their own physiological data, fostering a deeper connection to their body's functions. Through collaboration and critical thinking, students will develop insights into maintaining a positive body image and differentiating healthy relationships, aligning with Kentucky standards.
Standards
  • [Kentucky] 7.1.5 - Explain the importance of a positive body image.
  • [Kentucky] 6.1.4 - Discuss how emotions change during adolescence and explain appropriate ways to express and respond to needs, wants, emotions and feelings.
  • [Kentucky] 8.1.5 - Differentiate healthy and unhealthy relationships.
Competencies
  • Productive Collaborator - Engages with others to achieve a common goal through building positive relationships, actively listening, showing empathy, and making individual contributions to a larger group.
  • Critical Thinker - Thinks deeply and makes informed decisions to create solutions or new understanding supported by relevant and reliable evidence.
  • Empowered Learner - Demonstrates mastery and application of academic competencies. Develops the skills and dispositions to persist through difficulties and plan for a future of self-improvement.

Products

Students will design a virtual reality experience that takes participants on a journey through the human body, showcasing various systems and processes. They will create narratives and insights based on their learning, allowing others to explore anatomy and physiology interactively. Additionally, students will produce digital presentations or video diaries documenting their personal experiments with tracking bodily functions, connecting their findings to classroom content.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience with a 'Body Exploration Challenge' where students use wearable technology to track their heart rate, steps, and sleep patterns over a week. Begin with an engaging demonstration of the technology, followed by a group discussion on the importance of understanding bodily functions. Encourage students to set personal goals for their exploration, fostering curiosity and anticipation for the insights they will gain.

Exhibition

Students will organize a 'Body Awareness Walk' through the school, showcasing their projects and findings. Each station along the walk will feature interactive displays and experiments related to different bodily functions, inviting visitors to engage with hands-on activities and discussions. Students will act as guides, sharing insights and encouraging participants to reflect on their own body awareness and the interconnectedness of body systems.
