Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to immerse students in identifying and using short vowel sounds through interactive and collaborative activities, including the creation of a phonics journal that will be built upon throughout the year. By engaging with peers and community partners, students will develop phonemic awareness and apply their understanding in creative projects. This approach fosters critical thinking, collaboration, and self-reflection, allowing students to demonstrate their phonics skills in a meaningful and supportive environment.

Learning goals

Students will enhance their phonemic awareness by identifying and categorizing short vowel sounds in words, while contributing to a phonics journal that will be expanded throughout the year. They will collaborate to create a class book, integrating phonics with artistic expression, and demonstrate their understanding through a Phonics Parade. This experience will foster productive collaboration, critical thinking, and the application of phonics skills in real-world contexts.

Products

Students will create a collaborative class book, with each page showcasing a short vowel word, an illustration, and a sentence. Additionally, they will maintain a phonics journal throughout the year, adding entries that reflect their growing understanding and mastery of short vowels. Visual art pieces integrating short vowel words will also be produced and displayed during the 'Phonics Parade.' These projects will culminate in a procession through the school, where students present their work to parents and peers, celebrating their learning journey.

Launch

Begin the learning experience by creating a collaborative "Vowel Valley" sound wall, featuring large, colorful banners for each short vowel. Invite students to explore the valley by listening to and repeating words associated with each vowel sound, using props or objects that correspond to those sounds. Encourage them to interact with the wall by adding pictures or drawings of items containing the short vowel sounds. Introduce a phonics journal where students can document their discoveries and reflections, setting the foundation for an ongoing, year-long exploration of phonics.

Exhibition

Students will create a phonics journal that will be added to throughout the year, showcasing their evolving understanding of short vowel sounds. During the 'Phonics Parade,' they will present entries from their journal, sharing their illustrated pages and reading aloud to parents and peers. This ongoing journal will serve as a testament to their growth and learning journey, celebrated by the school community.
