Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to cultivate essential competencies in students by engaging them in hands-on, project-based activities that foster collaboration, critical thinking, and personal growth. Through real-world examples, guest speakers, and interactive activities, students will develop skills that prepare them for success in school and beyond. This initiative aims to create a supportive and respectful learning environment where students can thrive as empathetic collaborators, resilient risk-takers, and confident communicators.

Learning goals

The learning goals for this project focus on fostering competencies such as empathy, collaboration, critical thinking, and leadership across grades K-5. Students will engage in activities that promote positive relationships, active listening, and problem-solving to achieve common goals. Through hands-on experiences, students will develop the ability to make informed decisions and contribute meaningfully to their school community. The project aims to cultivate persistence and self-improvement skills, encouraging students to advocate for a respectful and pro-social environment.
Standards
  • HS.3.1 - Demonstrate collaboration, cooperation, and leadership skills.
  • 6.1.2 - Participate in activities that require problem-solving, cooperation, and team-building.
  • CH.6.4.3 - Demonstrate ways to advocate for a positive, respectful school and community environment that supports pro-social behavior.
Competencies
  • Productive Collaborator - Engages with others to achieve a common goal through building positive relationships, actively listening, showing empathy, and making individual contributions to a larger group.
  • Critical Thinker - Thinks deeply and makes informed decisions to create solutions or new understanding supported by relevant and reliable evidence.
  • Empowered Learner - Demonstrates mastery and application of academic competencies. Develops the skills and dispositions to persist through difficulties and plan for a future of self-improvement.

Products

Students will collaboratively create a "Portrait of a Graduate" mural that visually represents each competency, incorporating artwork and symbols from all grade levels to highlight their understanding and personal connections. Each class will contribute a short video presentation, demonstrating how they embodied a specific competency through their projects and activities. The final week will culminate in a school-wide showcase, where students present their contributions and reflections to peers, staff, and community members, fostering a sense of achievement and community pride.

Launch

Begin the project with a school-wide assembly featuring a panel of local community leaders who embody the Portrait of a Graduate competencies in their professions. Each leader will share personal stories and examples of how they demonstrate these competencies in their daily work. Follow this with a hands-on activity where students collaborate in mixed-grade groups to brainstorm and sketch ideas for a community project that incorporates these competencies. This launch will set the stage for deeper exploration and application of the competencies throughout the project.

Exhibition

Students will host a "Community Collaboration Fair" where they showcase projects demonstrating their growth in the Portrait of a Graduate Standards. Each grade will present a project aligned with one of the competencies, such as a mural for Empathetic Collaborator or a science experiment for Creative Problem Solver. Invite local leaders and guest speakers to engage in discussions with students about their projects, fostering real-world connections. The fair will include interactive stations where students can demonstrate their problem-solving processes and communicate their learning journey. This event will allow students to share their achievements with peers, teachers, and the broader community, celebrating their progress in a meaningful way.
