Purpose

Students will engage in a hands-on, project-based learning experience designed to cultivate leadership skills through the exploration of the "Leader in Me" habits. By integrating elements from Fortnite, students will collaboratively design a game or activity that embodies these leadership principles, fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and self-directed learning. This project will encourage students to reflect on their roles as leaders within their school community, enhancing their sense of identity and belonging while meeting educational standards and competencies. As a model of the final product, students can create a Fortnite-inspired scavenger hunt that incorporates challenges reflecting each leadership habit, allowing peers to experience and learn these concepts interactively.

Learning goals

Students will collaboratively design a Fortnite-inspired leadership game that incorporates the habits of an effective leader, fostering creativity and teamwork. They will engage in discussions to explore leadership qualities and apply them in real-world scenarios within their school environment. Through self-reflection and peer feedback, students will develop self-directed learning skills and enhance their academic mindset, establishing a sense of identity and belonging. Critical thinking and problem-solving will be emphasized as students navigate complex questions about leadership and community impact. As a model of the final product, students can create a digital or physical game board that illustrates leadership challenges and solutions inspired by Fortnite, presenting it during an exhibition to classmates.
Standards
  • DA:Pr6.1.8.a - Demonstrate leadership qualities (for example commitment, dependability, responsibility, and cooperation) when preparing for performances. Use performance etiquette and performance practices during class, rehearsal and performance. Document efforts and create a plan for ongoing improvements. Post-performance, accept notes from choreographer and apply corrections to future performances.
  • DA:Pr6.1.III.a - Demonstrate leadership qualities (for example commitment, dependability, responsibility, and cooperation) when preparing for performances. Model performance etiquette and performance practices during class, rehearsal and performance. Enhance performance using a broad repertoire of strategies for dynamic projection. Develop a professional portfolio (resume, head shot, etc.) that documents the rehearsal and performance process with fluency in professional dance terminology and production terminology.
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.6.1 - Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 6 topics, texts, and issues, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will collaboratively design a Fortnite-inspired board game that incorporates the eight habits of an effective leader. Throughout the project, they will document their process and reflections in a digital portfolio, showcasing their learning journey and leadership growth. By the end of the two weeks, students will present their game to peers and teachers, demonstrating their understanding of leadership qualities and strategies for dynamic projection. As a model of the final product, students can create a prototype of the board game with detailed instructions and visuals that illustrate how each habit is integrated into gameplay.

Launch

Begin the project with a Fortnite-inspired team challenge where students create a virtual map of their school, incorporating zones that symbolize each habit of an effective leader. Teams will collaborate to design activities within each zone that demonstrate the application of these habits in school settings. This interactive launch encourages students to engage in critical thinking and problem-solving, while fostering a sense of belonging and identity. The challenge will set the stage for deeper exploration of leadership qualities and self-directed learning throughout the project.

Exhibition

Students will design and host a "Leadership Fortnite Fair," where they present their Fortnite-inspired games or activities to classmates, teachers, and family members. Each student will showcase how their project incorporates the habits of an effective leader, demonstrating proactive strategies, collaboration, and critical thinking. The fair will include interactive stations where visitors can engage with each project and provide feedback. Students will document their learning journey and reflections in a portfolio, highlighting their growth and leadership skills throughout the project. As a model of the final product, students can create a digital portfolio or video presentation that captures the essence of their project and its impact on their understanding of leadership.
