"AI vs. Humanity: Beauty in the Balance"
1-pager
Purpose
The purpose of this project is to engage students in a meaningful exploration of what defines humanity's beauty while critically examining the increasing role of artificial intelligence in our lives. Through reading, reflection, and creative expression, students will develop a deeper understanding of AI's impact on society, including issues of bias and accessibility. They will create both human and AI-generated art and poetry, fostering self-directed learning and critical thinking. This project encourages students to reflect on their identity and place in a world where technology and human experiences intersect.
Learning goals
Students will explore the concept of humanity and beauty through the lens of artificial intelligence by engaging with dystopian and utopian fiction, specifically "Klara and the Sun." They will gain an understanding of AI's functionality and its role in society, while also creating both human-made and AI-generated poetry and art. Throughout the project, students will reflect on their evolving perspectives, culminating in a collection of artful reflections. They will develop self-directed learning skills, enhance their academic mindset, and apply critical thinking and problem-solving to address complex questions about humanity and technology.
Standards
- 3B-AP-08 - Describe how artificial intelligence drives many software and physical systems.
- 3B-AP-09 - Implement an artificial intelligence algorithm to play a game against a human opponent or solve a problem.
- 2-IC-21 - Discuss issues of bias and accessibility in the design of existing technologies.
Competencies
- Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
- Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
- Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
Products
Students will create a portfolio of human-made poetry and art pieces, alongside AI-generated poetry and art, to explore the differences and similarities in creativity between humans and machines. Throughout the project, students will engage in artful reflections that document their evolving thoughts and insights, culminating in a final exhibition that showcases their work and reflections. This exhibition will serve as a platform for students to share their understanding of what makes humanity beautiful and how AI can complement or challenge human creativity.
Launch
Kick off the project with an interactive gallery walk featuring a mix of human-created and AI-generated art and poetry. Invite students to observe and discuss their initial thoughts on the differences and similarities between the two. Follow this with a class discussion on what they believe makes something uniquely human, setting the stage for exploring the essential questions throughout the project. This launch will engage students' curiosity and set a collaborative tone for the learning journey ahead.
Exhibition
Students will host a "Humanity and AI: A Celebration of Beauty" exhibition, showcasing their human-made and AI-generated poetry and art pieces. The event will feature interactive stations where attendees can explore the creative process behind both human and AI works, including a live demonstration of AI art generation. Students will also present their artful reflections, sharing insights into their evolving understanding of what makes humanity beautiful. The exhibition will invite community members, peers, and families to engage in discussions about the role of AI in society and the unique qualities that define human creativity and expression.
